e70 steering wheel switch cover peeling

2008 e70 4.8i. Standard steering wheel, heated, non sport.

Trying to replace these switch covers myself due to dreaded peeling issue. Dealer won't cover under warranty, citing "wear and tear" item.

1. Anyone have pics on how to remove? Have seen various posts but non that are e70 with standard steering wheel specific. So far I managed to remove one T20 torx screw in back of cover, but the plastic cover won't come loose completely. Seems to be stuck behind airbag. Want to avoid removing airbag if at all possible.

2. Does anyone know what the part number is for just the plastic switch covers, not the complete switch assembly with wiring as shown below. BMWFANS and REALOEM only list the assembly pictured below.

Will probably cover with carbon fiber film once removed ...

You need to remove the steering wheel to get those off. At least, that's probably the easiest and safest way.

Is this peeling common because I just noticed the same on my '07. It is predominately on the left cover as opposed to the right.

I had the same issue, but the dealer covered it under warranty. Very common issue.

I believe it's one piece with the cover and the switch. My dealer replaced it under warranty as well. Part number is 61-31-9-249-141.

I'm not showing the covers available separate from the switch. koolkat1973 is correct on the part number and if you would like to avoid your dealer you can find the switch here.

Here you go 2008 BMW X5 Parts - getBMWparts.com powered by Tischer BMW - Your #1 Source for all OEM BMW Parts/Accessories!

If you need help installing let me know I did this myself 3 months ago. BTW if you quote this price that Tischer BMW offers your local dealer may match like mine did and then no shipping.

Thanks everyone for the replies and suggestions. I am learning that these plastic covers are NOT available without the electronic switches.

The only question that remains now is, is the OE replacement part truly improved, as some claim, ie no more peeling, or would a 3M DiNoc carbon fiber redo make more sense ... Certainly the CF solution is simple and much less expensive, especially the matt black color version.

This should absolutely be covered under your warranty assuming your still less than 50k miles. You need to bitch more or go to another stealership.

I got a new switch, it is not the same rubberized coat as the old switch. Still has a soft feel to it and I am very pleased with the look and much more durable.
