Why?
Just want it louder? Or you think it will add "performance"? Get a JBD tune if you want performance, or if Dinan ever does one... |

Eisenmann diesel
Eisenmann said the x6 35i is the same application for gas and diesel exhausts. They said it will be fine on x5 diesel. Any thoughts?

It actually might not sound too bad. Some diesel exhausts sound really good while others sound like semi-trucks. I just don't know if I would want my bmw x5d to be loud like that. I would rather hear the turbos spool all day long than the exhaust garbling

This is also the reason you don't see any aftermarket systems for the D. However it is possible to bypass this system but there would be alot of coding issues, not meet CARB and EPA standards, nor be street legal in most if not all states. These systems are in place for most Diesel trucks in the US but are for, "off-road use only." It simply isn't worth it at this time. Plus the plumes of black smoke that would pour out of you X5 would make it look like a POS. |

Once you get up into the resonator or CAT, exhaust headers, etc then you run afoul of EPA and CARB regs. Most exhausts are very restrictive in the headers, cats...so a muffler is $1000-2000 for some racerboy sounds. And so you can say "I've got a performance exhaust".... With a diesel, the DESIGN of the outflow is optimized to extract low RPM power - in terms of back pressure and turbo activation. (If you want to see an astonishing movie, look up Truth in 24, about the Audi Diesels at Lemans... they run virtually SILENTLY, extracting all power via exhaust controls...) When you mess with the back pressure and exhaust flow, unindtended things CAN happen... and I can pretty much guess that the SOUND will just be a louder diesel/turbo and not any kind of pleasant growl, whine or shriek (ie V8, V6 or V10.. )Having said all that, sure like to hear what it sounds like... At the Porsche museum in Stuttgart they have a series of domes you can walk under, and hear the motors of different race engines. It was really pretty cool... it reinforced my feeling that each engine design has its own 'sound'... A |

Having owned a few diesel trucks with modified exhausts, I can speak to this. While most aftermarket exhaust are cat back, not all of them are. There are several that are true complete exhausts. Look it up. Two, I never said that the exhaust systems are not legal to sell, but bypassing the Diesel Exhaust Filtration (DEF) is not street legal due to the emissions requirements, thus these aftermarket parts are sold as "off road use only." The entire exhaust system is restrictive, the cats, muffler, headers, and pipes, etc. In the BMW with the UREA system in place, (it can by bypassed.) no one is going to mass produce an aftermarket system for this vehicle because the market isn't there. It is there for the Fords, Chevy's, etc. And when you bypass the DEF, emissions are changed. So before correcting everyone on these blogs, check yourself. Thanks. |

Muffler
So, all that being said is there a muffler out there that can change my stock sound?
