This is also the reason you don't see any aftermarket systems for the D. However it is possible to bypass this system but there would be alot of coding issues, not meet CARB and EPA standards, nor be street legal in most if not all states. These systems are in place for most Diesel trucks in the US but are for, "off-road use only." It simply isn't worth it at this time. Plus the plumes of black smoke that would pour out of you X5 would make it look like a POS.

No, no... all aftermarket exhausts are just "cat back" or simply the muffler and tailpipes... since they only change the sound, and do not impact emissions, they are legal to sell.
Once you get up into the resonator or CAT, exhaust headers, etc then you run afoul of EPA and CARB regs.
Most exhausts are very restrictive in the headers, cats...so a muffler is $1000-2000 for some racerboy sounds. And so you can say "I've got a performance exhaust"....
With a diesel, the DESIGN of the outflow is optimized to extract low RPM power - in terms of back pressure and turbo activation. (If you want to see an astonishing movie, look up Truth in 24, about the Audi Diesels at Lemans... they run virtually SILENTLY, extracting all power via exhaust controls...) When you mess with the back pressure and exhaust flow, unindtended things CAN happen... and I can pretty much guess that the SOUND will just be a louder diesel/turbo and not any kind of pleasant growl, whine or shriek (ie V8, V6 or V10..

Having said all that, sure like to hear what it sounds like... At the Porsche museum in Stuttgart they have a series of domes you can walk under, and hear the motors of different race engines. It was really pretty cool... it reinforced my feeling that each engine design has its own 'sound'...
