Yet that Hunter 9700 with recent calibration at a GoodYear didn't fix my vibe issue at 60mph+ when a regular machine (the 4th one I tried) at a gas station did. The "tech"... he didn't do anything special except read the number (simply says 0.5 or 1.0, etc.) and hammer weights onto the back of the rim. Was standing right beside him the whole time. Sigh...

So Discount Tire is okay - they have been great on small jobs and I am looking to them for my next set - but even if they have the Hunter 9700 I need to stand and watch the guy work? Do I have that right?

I just leave my 20" tires alone--they are off-set, directional--I mean unless they really need to get balanced you aren't going to notice that much difference nor extend the life of the tire that much. To me, it's not worth the risk of some guy jacking with the car's set-up. I have 10K miles on them with 60% tread left--that works for me.

Hi all, I got my new conti dws installed today but now the car is pulling to the right when driving. Do I need alignment? Also are the tires psi the same as the run flats? I have the 20s. The sticker on the door says 33 psi front and 35 psi rear. I dunno if it's the same for run flats and none run flats. Thanks in advance!

I just wanted to update my experience with Discount Tire. So after the install of Conti DWS, I noticed they scratched my rims, also the car would pull heavily to the right and the ride was very bumpy at highway speeds 60+. Thought it was time for an alignment, even though my 2011 only has 7800 miles. After alignment, the pull to the right is less severe and dealer swapped front wheels and it's better but the bumpyness was still present. Nevertheless, I filled out the Discount Tire survey and voiced my concern and today they contacted me and wanted me to go back so they can make things right. They even offered to reimburse me for the alignment cost if I bring them the receipt from the dealer. My wife doesn't want me to go back to them because they might messed up the alignment. But I decided to let them try to fix the issues to earn my future business. I give them thumbs up for trying to make things right. Since we are leaving for vacation in Hawaii this week, I made an appointment for next Saturday 11/05 and we'll see if they live up to their promise to fix things and reimburse me for my alignment cost.

Are the 20's hard to mount and balance? Or did I get defective tires? Although I'm not happy at them for scratching the rims, but I know most shops won't be as careful as you want them to be when they are working on it and I'm more concerned about the bumpy ride and the car not going straight.

I would be cranked on the rim scratch results: they should have used those teflon wheel bibs...and, most good joints, inc the one DT I've been to, will slow & fast spin the tire(s) before mounting to make sure it isn't a bum tire.

And, a good RoadForce balance job should make the wheel/tire set up as close to perfect as they can get. I would have taken a Pasadena on the alignment, even 'there'. It takes some knowledge and a real alignment guy to do the X, from what I've read here.

And, why do so many people feel the need for a 'alignment' when getting new tires or tire/wheel combo? Was it out of spec or steering/handling odd before the new tires?
GL, mD

Had Discount Tire install a set of DWS on my wife's 35d just last week. They've always done a good job for me and this one was no exception. Plus they're fast. They make a lot of money just on volume. I did have a slight issue though with the valve stems not letting me add air when I got home. They would let air out, but not in, at least not with my compressor. Had to use a bicycle pump to add a couple pounds to each tire... Boy did that suck. Anyone else have the same problem? I did not opt for the TPMS rebuild option since the vehicle only has 30k miles and I'd never had trouble adding air before. I know they use a solvent of some kind to coat the edge of the tire and wheel for installing the tire on the rim, and there was sure a bunch left on the tire when they were done... Wonder if that could have gunked up the valve stems from the inside?

boyce- Cannot think of anything that would do that....

(I had my shop toss on and old, beat used tire to turn my car back in to BMW as a lemon...and they had a $15 per tire "TPMS Seal Kit" on the work order. I said "no way I am going for that...hell, I'd perfer you dont even balance them") Air went in and out, no problem.

mD- Good question.... I've wondered the same, when do you do (check?) the alignment? If you SEE tire issues, it is too late.

Personally for $99 I do it every two years or every set of tires, whichever comes first....

I too had pulling and vibration issues with Conti DWS tires on my '08 sport with 20" wheels. After they tried rebalancing, indexing, and rotating tires side to side I still had problems. They even said one of my wheels had a slight bend on the inside edge so I bought a new one and they swapped it too. Still had issues. They finally agreed to order new tires for me. At that point I decided that I had had enough with the Contis and they gave me a good deal on Michelin Latitudes, so I ordered those. Couldn't be happier. No issues at all. Just tell them to give you a good deal on the Michelins and get those Contis off.
