I think that the V8 and the diesel are about the same, for what it is worth. Both engines will last longer than the rest of the vehicle, with scheduled maintenance as per BMW recommendations (old school = higher cost).

Best way to ensure lower life cycle costs and reliability is to restrict the high tech option selection. That isn't just going to benefit cost and reliabilty, it is also recognizing that life cycles for modern electronics are much shorter than for vehicle platforms. A current Nav system will be completely outclassed in a year or two, but it will be offered in a BMW through a two to three year design cycle, and a seven year production cycle. How many 10 year old electronic devices are you still using?

Completely understand where you are coming from, however I respectfully disagree. While the actual innovation/functionality of the given technology will be quickly outdated it will function as designed provided there are not glitches for a very long time.

Having said that if there are computer related issues my bet is, I could be wrong here and if I am so be it, that reprogramming the car is much cheaper than replacing an engine. Now that assumes a catastrophic failure in the engine but that is what we are talking about here in terms of long term reliability.
