USB Help please
I have a 2gb USB drive that works fine. When I plug the 32gb drive in...it reads it, comes up with a menu, artists, albums, genre, etc...then it crashes...ugh! Is there a capacity limitation on the USB? I tried the drive on another computer and it works fine. Thanks for the help/input. Bob- |

When I encounter this I always try another thumb drive first.

Just a guess/possibility, but in the past I have run into problems when a particular device would require a specific format for the drive to be reliably readable: File Systems and Thumb Drives: Choosing between FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS to get a faster USB Flash Drive I do not know if BMW requires a specific format, e.g., FAT32 vs, NTSF |

Could it be some characters causing it?
Either way, just copy the music to your PC and then format and retry with same music. What happens when you try to import the songs to your BMW? Maybe it will crash in the middle of a certain album, then you will know that's the problem. |

FAT32
Check the owner's manual. I think the thumb drive needs to be FAT32.

Disk Format can be FAT, but for 32GB and above you need FAT32.
You can play mp3, wav, various WMA formats including WMA Lossless. Wav files dont support tags, so WMA Lossless gives you the great fidelity with tags. I can hear a noticeable difference between mp3 and WMA Lossless. |

Stimulate, can you embed album art in WMA?
Are you using WMP to rip CD's to WMA's? |

I dislike compression.
Stimulate, i very much agree. Compressed audio formats, with rare exception, sound unnatural and lifeless. Of course, my opinion based on listening to good home hi-fi system. I have yet to make comparisons in a BMW...

I recently tried switching over from my ipod classic with the y cable to a 64Gig USB flash drive.
I loved the ipod except it always started from the beginning of the ipod each time i started the car up, so i decided to try a usb stick instead. Needless to say, I am not having much luck with this either. I have it formatted in the FAT32 format, and have about 10gigs worth of music on it. I plugged it into the arm rest console of my 08 X5 with the latest software update. When i use the flash drive, it starts to play, but once i try to skip songs, it will freeze and say it is trying to read the drive. Anyone have a fix?? TIA |
