2012? 2007? How old is the battery? What is your normal commute pattern?
Dealer will run a 'charging system diagnostic' that will show them kind of a histogram of your driving distances....if you drive short trips they may refuse to warrant it...then again, you may be out of warranty, who knows. |

its a 2009, so its under full warranty, had it towed at BMW expense, and taxi home at BMW expense. Its not the battery or anything to do with charging...everything in the vehicle works (except the engine!), and like i said it turns over just fine, plenty of juice...just wont start.

Sorry, missed that. Strange symptom- shifting failed first, then no start... Keep us posted.

My 09 would shift out of park long enough to get rolling, then automatically slam itself back into park while the car was moving. it turned out to be a programming issue that they fixed under warranty... perhaps you are experiencing the same sort of thing. there is nothing mechanical in our shifters, it is all by wire, so i wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of electrical issue there. the cranking and no start thing is very curious though is it a diesel that you ran out of DEF? haha.

SA said it was some kind of wiring/programming issue....vague. I will find out more when I pick it up tomorrow.

You should be able to understand what was wrong and what was fixed...and this should be ON the work order/receipt they give you. People tend to be tentative about asking, and assume it is because they 'don't know car stuff' that they don't understand...so they just sign the invoice and take the shiny car.
My point of bringing this us, if it reoccurs or becomes an issue, you will only have the receipt to establish what was done... GL A |

i hear ya...believe me, i have no issues asking them for info or confronting them about issues. But I don't do it over the phone, I go in and sit with them.
On my last X5, I had a few heated discussions about a certain transmission issue and how they did things, and had to actually bring in a TSB that they claimed they couldn't find in their system, and weren't going to do under warranty. On my last service, I also got the SA to print out for me all my vehicle options, even though they don't like to provide that to clients. I make a point of knowing everything that's going on with my vehicle. It bugs me when people don't take the time to know or care. |

Turns out the issue was due to the EWS and DME not being aligned and the rolling code that they use to communicate didnt match. They had to do a 'reset' on the 2 modules, and then the vehicle would start. SO basically the watchdog system (EWS) which is the anti-theft system, wouldnt let me drive the vehicle or start it after I turned it off.
My bigger question to them was why it happened in the first place, is it a common issue, and would it happen again...the response was they dont really know . While I am happy to get my vehicle back, the lack of a root cause doesnt make me feel too warm and fuzzy. |
