Go for the paddles. Oddly, the paddles and lane departure warning were both on my '08 550i. I miss the paddles, I don't miss the LDW. It was just a neat feature that might be helpful if you drive at night and get tired a lot. However it also go annoying on some roads that you might want to cut the corners a bit, not even going over the line, just getting close. It also forces you to use a signal to pass or you get the vibration. I always do but many don't.

I had LDW on my previous BMW. Useless option. I think LDW is more suited for people who have problem staying in their lane.

Thank you for the reply, you just confirmed my thought about this. I already asked my dealer to remove the LDW from my build and make sure that my vehicle will have the paddles. It also saves me $950
The LDW would be more useful for my wife, and not for myself anyway. It appears that BMW added some of the new features to LCI E70, without significant re-design of the components. I really don't understand why those two functions can't co-exist. In any case, I'm so anxious to get the new vehicle. Thank again. |

My dads 650 has LDW and I had a 535 as a loaner for about 2 weeks with LDW and found that it was neat to turn on but the novelty wore off in like 2 days. It was useless if the road you were on did not have lane lines because it uses the lines to work. I love my paddle shifters on my 550 and use them quite a bit. I just wish BMW had this option when I got the wife's 12 X5 50.

What about adding adding aftermarket paddles?
Hi everyone, noob on the site here and first time posting.
To lvit01: Did your dealer confirm for you that the paddles and LDW can't coexist, or they are just not offered together? My reason for asking is that my '11 X5 came with LDW and heated steering wheel, both of which are must have options for me. My wife has limited rotation of her neck due to cervical fusion surgery, so the LDW is actually very useful for us (her 535 has it, and it's already prevented a few close calls). Anyway, I passed on the M-sport package since I did not want to give up the heated wheel. I was holding out hope that that I could buy aftermarket paddles and add them after the fact. I'm still looking for a source to see if they are even available (yet), so if anyone knows of one, or better still, someone who has actually installed them on an E70, please let me know. Any insights would be much appreciated. Thanks, Crash513 |

I don't know how flexible BMW NA is with this, but technically the normal Sport Steering wheel can be ordered with Lane Departure Warning and Paddle shifters (not the M sport wheel though).

According to my dealer the LDW can't coexist with M steering wheel with shifter paddles. I modified my build and removed the LDW. I'm not sure, if it means anything, but LDW and Active Cruise Control are not available on X5 M as well.
