Hi guys I have a 2012 x5 5.0 without the technology package but when I put the car in reverse i have the option for side cameras. I looked around my car and the cameras are under the mirror, can someone clarify this?

Those are the overhead view cameras. The side cameras are in the front wheel arch trim and give you a view to the left or right as you sit at an intersection.

do they come standard on the 5.0s? and what are the purposes of them?

The overhead view comes with the Premium package and the side view cameras come with the Tech package. The side view cameras are intended to allow you to have a better view at an intersection before you pull all the way out.

For models sold in Europe, the side cameras also read the speed signs and can display this information on the HUD. Very cool.
