And they are a lot more bright, I can easily drive with my lights off (rings on, DRL) through my pitch black driveway at night. I doubt you can do that with last gen halos. They also light up evenly around the ring. I think if you saw a new one on an X5 you would immediately distinguish it. Not sure how they were in older ones, but the new X5 has them running all the time. You cannot turn them off. I have seen bunch of X5s, even LCI's driving around with them off because theirs are note DRL LED's.

The LED stock ones? Yes, you can turn them off in iDrive.
Menu > Settings > Lighting > Daytime Running > Uncheck.

I was referring to the light dial, but thanks for the info, didn't know it was available, which kind of defeats the purpose. Most of the time you get a break on insurance premium if your vehicle has DLR, because it runs all the time.

Now the other question, why would anyone turn them off? They are beautiful.. Unless they are on a steakout mission.

Yes they are. Sometimes, though, I turn them off to avoid being perceived as a snob showing off. They do stand out in a parking lot at night.
Other times, when I go for a cup of coffee, I see these teenagers with blue dim knockoff (bmw-look) halos on their Civics in the parking lot. I do enjoy seeing them stare and point, when I turn off the headlights, and the angel eyes brighten up.

I keep my headlights off most of the time. For some reason either the sensors are over sensitive, or they have hard time adjusting to the sunlight after getting out of a tunnel. They seem to get stuck in On position. I notice the little green light is on even though it is perfectly sunny outside. So I just dial it off. But then I don't get the super cool angel lights when I unlock my X5 from distance, then I realize "Damn, I kept the lights off again".

I drive with the dial in "0" position untill after sunset. The law allowes driving with headlights off 30min after sunset.

Living in Seattle, where it's cloudy alot, the headlights come on even in shade, while it's 1pm or something. Kinda annoying.

Also, I wish there was a way to have taillights not come on during DLR.

I think that green light on the dial is counter-intuitive. When I press window lock, the green light comes on. Same for heated steering wheel or auto-wipers. But for Auto lights, there's no need for green light, since the button is physically turned to the left. You would think that green button would light up only if headlights turn on automatically. But it's on all the time, even if headlights are off.

Are you sure about the light? I noticed that green light will not come on unless the headlights are ON automatically. Mine is always off, but when I drive into a tunnel, green light comes on together with the dash lights, etc..

It is an indicator of the light's on/off state.

Sometimes (refer to my last post) when it is super sunny outside, that green light is the way I can tell if my darn headlights are still ON because you can't tell by looking at the dash. I wish the headlight on indicator was in the instrument panel instead of above the dial.

I have never seen the green light off. That could be due to the X being parked in the shade, and I always see it come on.
You might be right - I will check during a sunny day out of shade (it's Seattle, don't be hoping).
