More important to see if the filter grooves look black or have dirt trapped in there, then it's time to replace.

I posted on BF. Replace it. The dirt you CANNOT see, that stays lodged in the pores, is the real culprit.
Replace it every 7500 ,miles with stock filters and you'll always be on the 'best' part of the filters 'clogged vs lifetime' curve. |

I have an extra filter in hand, but been on this filter for less than 5k miles. It does look dirtier than a new one, but filters aren't cheap. I'll stay with it just a bit more.
