The poster in this thread may NOT- and indeed may just have a worn out battery not due to any particular underlying fault.

OP also may have an Extended Warranty (EW) which will surely not want to cover a battery, which is almost always excluded. (Unless there is another provable fault that killed the battery.)

I wouldn't call it a long history but it started with the clock and just got progressively worse relatively quickly.

How many documented visits to BMW under the 4/50k warranty?

Well actually I have had the same issues and have repeatedly taken my vehicle each time to the dealer since I purchased it in Germany in 2008. So I am thinking with that being said I too should not be on the hook for a new battery either

Good. You will want to make the argument as follows:

Documnented issues with excessive battery drain- all reported and said to be fixed by BMW- were the proximate cause of the battery demise.

While normal wear and tear is excepted by all warranties, if the battery was damaged by another defect, then the warranty does cover all effects of the defect- including replacing the battery.

Now, you have a 4-5 year old car. Given the heat here, I'd be OK with that life.

Finally, be very careful when you bring the car in- you do not want they proceeding with the work and then getting stuck paying for it. I'd authorize diagnostic only, and if they say new battery you tell them "I can get a _______ (bmw OEM) for $____ shipped to me and pop it in for $60 (Including my indy resetting the battery software),,,so you need to be at $____". They know you have options, or think you do- and you haven't allowed them to do the work so your aren't trapped.

My 2 cents

Well I appreciate your 2 cents ard. I did tell them only diagnostic and to call me after they figure it out.

I had same problem AFTER reprogramming the car for an EGR valve replacement.

It turned out to be Steering Sensor losing calibration, which is a known issue in some cases, according to SA, after reprogramming the car. They performed sensor recalibration routine, and it was fine since then.

Steering sensor may also lose calibration for other reasons, for example after wheel alignment (again, not my words, but SA's).

Sorry guys but finally got my car back--took forever. Battery and alternator was fine? but the fault code was 5EC0. A steering angle sensor was faulty. Here's what they typed on the paperwork:

53642 internal fault in SZL performed short test and found fault codes 5EC0. Performed test plan S3450_L4_LWS-sterring angle sensor adjustment test plan was successful. DCS light came on during road test, scanned vehicle again and same code 5EC0. Performed test plan again and calibration with encoding and the SZL keeps changing to zero point during calibration. The SZL is faulty but will not give diag code for failure to initialize the correct angle. Left feed back on ISID. Replaced SZL and programmed SZL with CAS.
