Chain of problems... related or not?

I've recently had a chain of problems, and just wondering if those were related events, or independent issues which just happened to manifest themselves in short period of time...

* CEL event - problem with EGR valve, replaced, reprogrammed computer
* Next day - 4x4 error event, the steering wheel angle sensor did not re-calibrate after reprogramming... censor recalibrated
* Next day - diesel fumes smell for 5 minutes after cold startup - found crack in the EGR cooler, around where EGR valve connects (as per SA) - EGR cooler replaced
* 2 days later - CEL again, this time Air Mass Flow Sensor is bad, sensor replaced...

X has been fine since then for almost 2 weeks and 500 miles...

I am just wondering what are the chances for all these things to go bad immediately one after the ohter... I think they might have cracked the EGR cooler while replacing the EGR valve, but Air Mass Flow sensor going bad shortly after that?

For those of you mechanics, what is your take on this? Are these things related in engineering sense or in close proximity to each other? Any known/past experience with event chain like this one?

Thanks!

On #3 my guess would be the mechanic over-streseed the bung where the EGR valve screws in.

These issues can all be interrelated- BMW seems to be having horrendous and continuing issues with their software and how that 'trap' or detect errors. My guess.

The software in the car is one thing, then they have all the diagnostic stuff they run when the car come into the shop...all the codes and 'errors messages' that get set, and which declare "this part is bad" are really driven by subroutines that measure various values and make a guess as to what is bad...the BMW diesels have problems in this area.

Lets hope you car is fine- but I suspect the ultimate fix will be when they get the corrected software in your car! (And to be honest, your dealer and the master tech may be totally in the dark- and at BMW's mercy- on these issues. They get frustrated and annoyed too.)

Thanks ard, I suspect software for that, too... After all, the Air Mass Flow sensor, to my best knowledge, is part without moving parts... Not sure what it takes to damage it (perhaps broken EGR valve might have introduced extra exhaust gases into the intake channels and soot settled on the sensors - just a wild uneducated theory
