A few issues with my X5 50i
First and foremost is a newly discovered issue. Due to the rain storm we have in Socal today, I discovered that water could drip through my front reading light frame during the rain. It dripped more if I drove on an inclined surface. Wow, this definitely brought back the fond, distant memory of riding in my uncle's Fiat when I was little. And the front, top, and back cameras all went out, possibly due to the rain. I'll be bringing truck to the dealership next week. What should I also ask them to check to make sure that nothing else is damaged by the rain? What should they replace so I can make sure that this leakage won't happen again during the next rain. Second is that I've been noticing clunking sounds in the rear of the truck. This happens when I turn into a shopping plaza with a steep inclined entrance that made the rear of the car flex. I suspect it could be due to the spring flexing. What do you think? Luckily I drive the truck everyday (as opposed to some of my friends who have converted their BMWs into an ultimate garage machine with no more than 500 miles after almost 7 months of ownership) and am able to discover these issues early on before the expiration of warranty. Hopefully, these issues will be resolved soon. Your feedback and response is greatly appreciated. |

If no 3rd seat, I would first check under the rear floor storage area to see if anything, such as the spare tire, is loose. |

No spare tire option. Is the clunking sound normal?

I haven't ever heard it in my 2010 X35d, but some people have more sensitive hearing than me.

check the obvious first before you go nuts... check the tool kit under the trunk lid to make sure all is properly snug and clipped in their respective slots... also pull the left side panel and examine the amp and surrounding brackets to see if there is anything loose. you may also need to check the actual battery to see if it is loose...
could be anything...

It sounds the common tailgate noise. I would open the rear hatch and open the lower half. Once the lower half is open, u will see "U" shaped latches on both the right and left sides. Wrap these latches with a few layers of electrical tape abd the noise should go away. Hope his helps . . .

I had the same noise on my 2009 X5. Turned out it was the tailgate that needed adjustment (the smaller fold down tailgate). Took several trips to the dealer, including me pushing on the tailgate and showing them exactly where it was coming from. After several denials and claims of fixing it they finally got it right.

The drain for the sunroof may be clogged causing water to back up and drain into the cabin of the SAV. The dealership should be able to clear this easily if that's the case.

Thank you all so much for the advice and fix. I checked the tool box and the spare compartment and everything was nice and secure. I had not had the chance to check the battery yet, as the truck is currently at the dealership. One more thing I forgot to add was when it started leaking water, all my cameras (top view and backup) were knocked out but this morning everything is back to normal again (a nice breezy sunny day). Do you think if the wiring harnesses were inadvertently damaged by the rain? Gonna keep my fingers crossed that BMW does waterproof their wiring.

Just a quick update. Got the truck back tonight. According to the invoice all should be well now. The leakage was due do first clogged drainage (as everyone had predicted) and sunroof seal (that "was found to be folded" as reported on the invoice. Have not tested whether the clunking sound had disappeared (since the dealership could not replicate the sound) as it happens at specific places that I frequent at given conditions. The truck somehow seems to feel tighter for some reason - might be because I have not driven it for two days and had been driving a 335 loaner. We'll see when it rains again!!!
