safelite and winshield

Hello guys,

safelite is replacing my windshied, dealer quote was $1,779 and insurance wanted to pay only like $450 so I had to take the safelite route, SF agent told me they are using Original equipment glass, I told him did not wan't aftermarket glass and the rain and condenser sensors changed, he said everything should go in as new, but they always tell you the same bs just to get it going.. any tips in case they don't do what they told me they are doing, cancel the thing and not let the guy do it? what would you guys do..

Ask safellite for the windshield part number of the windshield they are going to install.
If it's Original equipment glass the part number should be on the glass
with the BMW info included.

I just had my windshield replaced from Safelite this week. Went thru my insurance Allstate and they offered me aftermarket or OE, Clearly I chose OE and received the original BMW glass with all original seals, etc. I saw the tech install everything, it has the BMW logo, and all. So far pretty happy with it - saw the invoice close to 1100 total.

PLEASE READ, I think this can help you and everyone. I just had my windshield replaced 3 weeks ago. This is the process I went through. But let me start with a couple of story in my previous experiences with Safelite.
We had a windshield replaced for our RX300 years ago- it was done by a mobile unit on a Saturday in my driveway/garage. Nice guy. But once it was done, we noticed immedate air wooshing/leaage sound. I took it into Safelite local shop, he drove around the corner and said he would bet that there would be some sealant missing in some areas. He mentioned it's best to take it to the shop itself since these SUV glass are so big, the mobile unit only has one guy trying to center and set it using suction cups. So they took it off and showed me where the sealant wasn't touching the glass. They reset it at the shop with 2 people. All is well.
Then I had my e39 years ago also had windshelf replaced by them again. I took the time and took the car in. But guess what, they never pull my car in to the garage as they were really busy and had some guy outside using the mobile unit to replace my glass. I complained and he said if you hear anything, we'll make sure we fix it. I traded in that car pretty much a couple of weeks after that, but always had a paranoid feeling about it when driving on the highway thinking I am hearing excessive noise.
So the e70 needed replacement. I have heard horriable stories becasue of the rain sensors and mine also had Heads-up display..etc. So I took it to the dealer who had it's only bodyshop, they claim they fix autoglass store mistakes about once a month. So I had them estimate the replacement, beside the glass and molding also the rain sensor and another sensor needed to be replaced. All together was like 1,500. I then call Nationwide who's glass insurance co is Safelite - and asked them what they would pay maximum. She said the average around my area would be 1,250. I said that's fine. Even though I had full glass coverage. I was willing to pay some out of pocket. I then took the 1,250 to my dealer bodyshop asked them if they can give me a discount to get as close to 1,250 as possible. Even though they don't accept insusrance, because their bill rate is too high, he said would call them and let the insurance co know that there are other parts that are involved (rain sensor et al). so he called and actually talked them into reimbursing me the full amount.
I paid out of pocket first, then Nationwide/safelite sent me a check a week later after I filed a claim. The dealer had to first get authroization from safelite to do the work and I then faxed in the receipt and the pre-authorization paperwork.
It all worked out at the end. By the way, the car needed to be recoded/programed becasue the light sensor would not function correctly, the headlight was staying on the whole time thinking it's dark. so was the HUD, it was really dimm thinking it's at night.

hopefully this helps you.

When my mom used Safelite, they used a windshield made by Saint Gobain, one of the OE manufacturers and generally better than the Pilkington that came with the windshield. It was also a infrared (Climate Comfort) windshield that absorbed heat a lot better, although only small area next to the rain sensor is not metallic-tinted so her toll transponder has to be held in that top corner. The rain light sensor works just fine. So in our case, no issues, and if anything it was an improvement over the original glass. But of course, your results may vary.

Crack been there for a couple of years now...

The windshield in my '03 took a singificant piece of rock not long after I got it. It made a roundish crater which I had filled by Safelite. But about 9 months later it started to crack sideways and l figured I would change it when the crack got annoying or when I was about to sell the car. (chances are you change it and the week after a now rock comes in from outer space to get you again.....) So now I am ready to swap the glass as the crack is about a foot long and it is beginning to nag me.

Given the rather less positive experiences with the local Safelite people (both my own and others) I called Allstate Glass and they install Sekurit which is one of BMW's suppliers. This seems fine and at $260 it is almost too good to be true....

Anyone have experience with Allstate Glass in NoVa or MD?

Question golf ball through windshield.

Just had a golf ball go through the windshield (yesterday, Sunday).
getting quotes around the area, Chicagoland.
Should I be asking for OE or OEM? this will be the 3rd replacement other 2 were handled by GF , her car. Rain sensor currently does not work, aftermarket glass installed last time, rain sensor not re-programmed I guess

question: if you have full glass coverage (Allstate), are they supposed to cover it regardless of cost as long as it's not outrageous? Wonder why the OP's insurance was only covering $450. Glass is either covered or it's not, right?
