My X5 journey from MY1 to the last E70

In 2007 I bought my first BMW. It was the first E70 model and was fully loaded with all the options available including Adaptive Drive, HUD, Tech, 3rd Row, RSE, etc, etc. I quickly fell in love, it was an amazing vehicle despite its many flaws. The one flaw that really bugged me the most was the lack of power off the start and the lag of the 3.0 engine. The car was clearly under powered, but despite this I really enjoyed 5 years of driving it. Once on the highway, she had plenty of power and I rarely was in a situation where I didnt have enough to pass...it was that first acceleration from a start that ruined it.

I swore the next X5 would be the 50i due to the lack of power...but last week, I finally traded her in and ended up with a 2013 35i. The difference is really amazing. This new engine and transmission is as smooth as silk, the dreaded hesitation is gone and I have more than ample power from a start. I am really shocked at the difference in the two vehicles.

Unfortunately the new X5 lacks Adaptive Drive. During my test drives I really didn't notice how badly I would miss it...but it really is a must have feature on the X5. The difference is significant. The new X5 has the M Sport option, so the suspension is much tighter than my first X5...it is a bumpy ride.

Next time it will be AD for sure. Ive only been driving for a few days, but the improvements are vast from 2007 to 2013.

I have my 2013 X5 SAV ordered and can't pick it up until July. I added the M Sport package and Carbon Black paint and a few other options. I didn't add the Adaptive Drive because after reading multiple posts, many said it wasn't worth the addtional money.

Was it that much better for you (adaptive drive)?

The Sport suspension on the M Sport is very stiff, giving you a bumpy ride. The AD was smooth as glass. There is also a noticeable difference in cornering.

I like the M Sport suspension, but for long trips my 2007 was far more comfortable.

I had heard about the sport suspension, but I had to have the M package, I love the ground effects and M badging. Can't wait.

Its a beautiful vehicle w/ M Sport additions, and a nice upgrade to the 2007. The new idrive is much faster, and the nav is now usable. The transmission is a vast improvement over the 07. Its like a completely new vehicle.

My 2007 had a third row, which I used maybe 5 times in 5 years...but it did allow the middle row to tilt back and adjust slightly forward/back which is not available on this model w/o third row. The rear seating feels more cramped because of this.

I remember when you posted about your '07, and comparisons to your MDX(?). I wish it was in the cards for me to upgrade but other things are priorities. I sometimes hear that the lag is still there on a 35i? I wanted their twin turbo engine (europe got a 3.0sd twin turbo first in '08) but here I just couldn't wait anymore with twins coming in '08. Damn you BMW!

Any pics?

Yes, its been awhile. I remember you too.
coming from the 07, the 35i is like a rocketship

Wife still drives an MDX, now a 2011. The BMW is so much more refined than the Acura.

I'll post some pics soon.

X5FX, your X5 is bootiful! I'm waiting on my 2013 X5 35i M sport, but in carbon black with adaptive drive. After hearing your experience with AD, I'm happy I ordered it. Thanks. I initially ordered mine with the space gray, but after looking at the carbon black in its subtle dark blue hue in the sun light, I was sold on the color. However, the space gray reveals the beautiful curves of the X5 better. I'm glad you're happy with your X5.

Have you considered getting the Stage 2 Dinan tune? You'll get extra 55 HP and 101 lb-ft torque with full 4year/50,000 mile warranty for $2k! So much better than 15 HP and 30 lb-ft BMW offers in their M performance package for $1600.

Right behind you. Mine left the factory and is enroute to the dealer now. Hopefully I can pick it up by the end of the week. I also did the Carbon Black, very excited and can't wait!
