Agreed. Get the car a detail for $150, it will do just as much to make it last longer, and it will look good for a few weeks.

OP: You put Extended Warranty? in your post title. Are you planning on purchasing an aftermarket warranty/service contract/insurance plan? BMW hasn't traditionally offered extended warranties in Canada, but I see that they are starting now with the '11 models. You don't list the age of your vehicle, but I suspect it is older than that. If so, that leaves you with aftermarket policies only. Extended warranties are a bad investment, but can be a wise purchase decision. They are a bad investment, just like lottery tickets because on balance, purchasers collectively lose, and the house wins. Manufacturers make money on them (much more than they make selling vehicles) so on average, you get less back than you pay for one. Just like with all insurance, though, it can be a wise decision if the out of pocket costs for any potential repair will break you. You pay a premium to avoid surprises, not to hope to get more in repairs than the cost of the warranty. Avoiding surprises can be worth it to a lot of people.

Oups !
Not really my problem if you like to overpay, but it's the amount I've paid at my local dealer...

I've been a mechanic for more than a decade, and specialized in auto trans, active suspension, electronic components, injection, etc...

My advisor grew tired of hearing that I'd do it myself, so the fees became more reasonnable.

Even if you had 300$ to pay for that service, it's still recommended. And I should know what I'm talking about.
