At the end of the day I will be happy as long as the IOS 6 works properly on the 4S iPhone. Don't see much difference between the 4S or the 5 anyway.

As long as my Plugins & Apps are now working fine is all I want, you don't see your iphone when your in your BMW anyway so its not going to make any difference when its sitting in its cradle.

And the new BMW iphone 5 cradle could have a built in chip to convert to analog if they wanted to build one. There is alot of BMW owners who will not update to the iphone 5 until this problem gets sorted, and BMW are not the only ones with this problem, think Apple may have gotten ahead of themselves a little.

Old cars with the old iPhone interface that needed the y cable will work fine with the 30pin to lightening adapter.

The adapter supports analog audio out. Don't worry about iPod out. That's a special mode that allowed the iPhone iPod user interface to be displayed on the idrive screen for newer combox equipped cars. It needed the cradle to work anyway.

Newer combox equipped cars are fine since they didn't use analog audio and just used the USB white iPhone cable. Music and apps will all work as before.

For folks using the cradle ... Well you're have to wait for updated cradles or go back to using the y cable or white USB to iPhone cable depending on if you have the MULF or combox iPhone interface. No plugin or iPod out until the cradle gets updated.

Just got my 30-pin to lightning adapter from Apple this afternoon, plugged it onto my y-cable and here's what worked and didn't:

What worked: Audio worked fine, just as before. My iPhone showed up as a USB device and playback could be controlled via the steering wheel, with info on the screen. The iPhone 5 screen is in iPod Out mode just like older phones before

What didn't work: When you connect, you feel the vibrate of it being connected to a charger, but then immediately you get an error screen saying Charging Is Not Supported For This Device which sucks. So basically, I can choose integrated controls, or charging and listening via AUX with no steering controls. Hopefully BMW is working on a new y-cable.

Use for apple cable to lightning connector, not the y-cable, try that?

Not sure I follow, my y-connector is required on my 2010 x5, not just a plain USB cable (I'm pre-combox). The y-cable from BMW ends with a 30-pin iPod adapter, I slapped Apple's converter dongle to lightning, and no charging allowed but everything else worked.

Gotcha, did not realise you were pre-combox?

No charging. That doesn't make any sense. You definitely don't get the charging icon on the phone in the top right hand corner ?

I tried the cable version with the Y-Cable and it works fine. Admittedly its connected to Combox rather than MULF2 (pre Combox Ipod/USB interface) ... but I can't believe that would make any difference. The pin-outs are the same !!

There are reports of iPhone 5s not charging in certain circumstances ... not related to BMW, but in general. Using other charging methods ... Macbooks, different chargers, etc. Its possible you have a defective phone.

As a side note, and something BMW skip over ... is that the Y-Cable is required ..Combox or PreCombox when attempting to play iTunes purchased tracks that are DRMed.

I have a Y cable that enables me to use my iPhone 4 on my analogue screen in my car. I can scroll up and down through my iPhone's music library aswell as using the steering wheel controls.

However I've just got an iPhone 5 and an adapter also but it doesn't work.

The Y cable is the same as the photo above but the adapter is just one piece of plastic rather than plastic connecter then cable with the 8 pin on the end.

I'm driving a 2009 320d (E92).

I think my only option is to use an aux cable meaning I would lose all car functionality and would have to manually change tracks on my iPhone.

Does anyone know any different?

mathowie,

I posted this info elsewhere but my iPhone 5 is charging just fine with the Y-cable connected to the iPhone 5 adapter and also when connected to the iPhone 5 adapter cable (which apw2607 shows in the picture ^^ above.)

by the time the '14 X5 shows up on the market, there will be an iPhone7, which still will have a different type of a connector and a protocol, which will not be compatible with the new car model....
lol...
