New iPhone 5 in a 2010 X5: Am I screwed?

The new iPhone was announced today and with it, a new dock connector. I know the Fall 2011-present X5 has a USB-only option for audio playback through iDrive, but my early 2010 X5 relies on a dumb BMW USB+aux cable that I've found to be very finicky. It doesn't work if you add an extension cable and I've had it not work whenever I've tried to connect various adapters inline. I suspect the iPhone 5 with the 30-pin connector won't work, especially since the product page even says "iPod audio out not supported" in the small print.

Guess it's time to wait for the new 2014 X5 to get announced properly?

I would wait and see what the "peripheral" companies come out with once the phone is available. Or, you could stay with your existing phone *gasp

I would hope that for $29 the iPhone 5 adapter to make it work with older devices would work for you.

As the new x5 will have the new idrive the iPhone should work. The iPhone 5 has digital video out and video will not work on the current idrive as its analog input only.

a $150 used ipod touch 3g would prooooobably work to play music, no? Only reason I mention that instead of a plain ipod is because you can wifi sync your music if you park in range of your wifi, so updating music should be a cinch.

Old cars with the old iPhone interface that needed the y cable will work fine with the 30pin to lightening adapter.

The adapter supports analog audio out. Don't worry about iPod out. That's a special mode that allowed the iPhone iPod user interface to be displayed on the idrive screen for newer combox equipped cars. It needed the cradle to work anyway.

Newer combox equipped cars are fine since they didn't use analog audio and just used the USB white iPhone cable. Music and apps will all work as before.

For folks using the cradle ... Well you're have to wait for updated cradles or go back to using the y cable or white USB to iPhone cable depending on if you have the MULF or combox iPhone interface. No plugin or iPod out until the cradle gets updated.
