coloexpat is on a distinguished road
I wanted to paint the aluminum part black on mine, after searching multiple forums looking for the same answer you are asking and having no luck finding the answer I just went for it.

To remove the aluminum from the running board you will need to remove the boards entirely. Make sure to purchase the extra plastic clips in advance from BMW before you start. There are 2 real small "shims" for lack of a better description that essentially pull the aluminum piece into the plastic running board (do not forget to buy these), they break and are very easy to misplace. I just went to BMW and asked their parts guy to pull up a diagram of the running boards and the clips needed to attach to the truck. Once you have your clips it is really pretty simple, just take your time and work slowly. I removed from front to rear.

If you need help Ican look for some pictures when I get back to Germany. Iam on vacation back in Coloradoright now.
