iPhone integration

What am I missing here?

I just traded up my '07 for a 2010 with the newer iDrive.
I'm trying to get my iPhone 4s to play music via iDrive.
I have the Y cable plugged into both the aux and USB in the center console, and the other end into my iPhone but its not working. When plugged in I go to "Music" on the iPhone and it will flash every few seconds or so "accessory connected" but then goes back to the iPhone music screen. I never get the connection in the iDrive system.
I've tried the same with an iPod (4th gen), my old iPhone 3G, and an iPad 2 and all 3 of these devices connect, show the name of the device on the iDrive, and allow control from iDrive.
I have rebooted the iPhone.

I've searched and searched and can't find any compatibility issues.
My build sheet shows both "music interface for smartphone" (6NF) and USB audio interface (6FL)
Production date is 11-24-09.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

Are you using the Y cable that you had in the 2007 X5? Did your iPhone 4S work there?

If so, I assume it's the original 61120440645 cable (it'll have 0 440 645 on it). There are new cables like 61120440796 (which works with my X5 and iPhone 4S and 5) and even newer 61120440812. You can see the part numbers getting higher...

No, I never had anything working in the '07, it didn't even have the USB interface. All I could do with that car was aux cable and control w iPhone.

This is the cable that came with the car, it's the one ending in 0796 (as printed on the oval tube on the cable).

Thanks.

You're going to have to get a 2010 owner to provide input. I thought the Y-cable was for 6FL (which I have). I don't know what gets used for 6NF.

Thanks but no luck.
What year is your car?
I'm starting to learn there are subtle diff's in the integrations year over year.

It's a hit and miss deal finding the right cable. Took me about 6 months and 3 different cables until I got it to work. Then it worked fine with my iPhone 4 and 4s.

Does not work with my iPhone 5.

The 6FL was a complete waste of money. Now I just put music on my hard drive and a 32GB USB drive, I plug the USB drive in the console it just works.
