1. Does the outside latch (button on the door) work with the key inside? With the engine running?

If yes, then maybe the rear antenna is damaged/non-functional

2. If the outside switch doesnt work no matter what, then I am thinking switch...

Just FYI. An observation about using comfort access with my car.

1. If the car is off and locked, when I try to open from tail gate, comfort access works.
2. If the car was just on or still on and I get out to access something in the trunk (by manually unlocking the driver side door only), comfort access won't work (I have to manually unlock with key or have the car unlocked from the inside).

^ I don't have that experience with #2. That should not be the norm. The latch-press from the outside works whether the vehicle is on or off, keys in pocket.

Sounds like the C/A remote opens only driver's door, in which case tailgate can't be opened from outside (expected, tailgate and 3 other doors are locked).
There's a setting in iDrive to choose if first click of "open" button on remote opens all 4 doors (plus tailgate) or just driver's door.
I am guessing comfort access remote sends an "open" command, then iDrive interprets what doors (just drivers vs. all 4 + tailgate) to open.

This post is from 5 years ago, but I'm seeing this issue now on my 2008 and there's no resolution listed. To further describe the issue:

- car is off/locked, keys in pocket and first approaching only the trunk, pressing the trunk release on trunk won't open it - no response whatsoever - even if I reach the key closer to the front of the car (via the side).

- unlock car first with remote or door handle touch, pressing the trunk release on trunk will open it. Indicates a CA antenna issue, but didn't realize the trunk has a separate one. I guess that makes sense since the door handles have sensors and the trunk release doesn't. Anyone know more about this trunk CA antenna? I did check my fob battery.
