I understand it learns with your driving style but I could swear I read in a technical doc here that once the engine is shut off, it is cleared from memory. So in essence, it is only learning for that driving session. Need to dig further.

I spoke to them about it and told them my findings afterwards My gas mileage has never been better well except early on. Over the past year it has been horrible and shifting strangely from time to time. The only reason I made a stink about it was it revved up one day and then banged into the next gear like it was confused when to shift.

They have a range that they go by for the tranny when they check and it was outside of the acceptable range. At least that is what the paperwork said.

It does shift smoother, at the right rpm ranges and kicks harder when stepped down on.

My mileage has gone back to 20.9 mpg on a 50 mile highway run. Before it was 15.6-16.5 mpg. I watched this for a while to document.

The adaptation to learning your driving styles does not reset itself at each start. Like in my M5 you can have the dealership do one form of adaptation and you can also reset a minor one by driving at least 35-45 mph and holding back the paddles. Makes a world of difference.

Usually dealerships can't really help with MPG because who is to say your aren't going 90mph or gunning it at every light. That is why they can't really diagnose it for crappy mpg unless they drive it to test it over a period of time. Can't imagine they can really do that at the dealership.

RH71 - I have to get some decent pics. As I said we are pretty much twins. I have been eyeing a 2013 M5M in Alpine. Will be curious as to the next model X5M but still happy with my current X5.

The adaptations relating to the style of driving are reset with every engine start. This is the one what is reset by holding the throttle down. Could just turn the key off and do the same thing.

The adaptations inside the transmission that require a GT1 or similar to reset, and which adapt for transmission wear and fluid condition, can be reset and they stick.

what is your method of the tranny reset? I have tried everything that I have read in these forums and I don't get the same confirmation as other people ie. light on dash, a beep, none of that.

do you have an actual confirmation or do u just "feel" a difference?

Turn the ignition key to the on position; all lights on dash are on but engine "MUST NOT" running, press the gas pedal all the down to the floor and hold it for 30-40 seconds (make sure the floor mat is not under the gas pedal).
No light shown after the procedure. Transmission is shifting smoother now.

I have have 09 4.8 that seems to be experiencing this as well. Shifts are not smooth. Can you show the write from the dealership. I'll mention this point when I take my vehicle in for the braking system recall (07-10 X5's with eight cylinders). Thanks.
