100,000 miles service on 2007 X5

Hey guys,

My wife's 2007 X5 is now reaching 110,000 miles and I wanted her to take her car in for some preventive maintenance. The service technician recommends the following:

transfer case fluid
differential fluid
spark plugs
air filter
transmission fluid

Probably will cost me a little over $1000 for this work. Is this something you think I should do? I've been reading a lot of conflicting opinions on the tranny fluid. I'm thinking that I should just go ahead with it.

Is there some other work I should get done?

What do you guys think?

Thanks!

$1000 to change fluids? wow. Find a good indy who will do it for a lot less, or learn to do it yourself

Actually, I think $1K is reasonable, assuming it includes transmission pan/filter and some kind of warranty.

Brake fluid, power steering fluid...
agree on finding a 'NY' area Indie; it should be considerably less costly than a dealer, and the dealer will do his job to find a half dozen other things 'for you to consider that need attention/repair', imo.

I heard somewhere that if you havent ever had your transmission fluid replaced before 60,000 miles, you should just keep the old fluid that's in it forever. Supposedly, changing it will actually cause damage....

Good list $1k isn't horrible, 600-800 better. Do a brake fluid flush too.

god that is dumb.

It's a perfect trap by BMW: recommend service at 100k, then when you come in the say 'better not change it'.... Anyway, 40-60k change interval is my recommendation, and always better to change it. (the analogy I think of is the patient that feels a lump, and decides 'better not see a doc it might be cancer'....)

Thanks for all your responses.

The transmission fluid change alone is around $240. I'll have to find out if that includes pan/filter. The other fluids, spark plugs and air filter is $760. I'll have to find out how much a brake fluid flush will cost.

I'm finding out that I'll need a new belt tensioner and oil filter housing gasket.

Ouch!

in regards to tranny fluid change.. when i bought my E46 BMW said the fluid never has to be changed, something about it being made for lifetime protection??
the X5 just popped up left lamp malfunction and brake fluid warnings the other day so i'll be in the same boat shopping around for an indie shop

if you define the 'expected lifetime' of the transmission to be 100,000 miles, then you can get away with calling fluid 'lifetime'....

Anyway, BMW has since stepped back from the silly 'lifetime' concept, AFAIK.
