E70 Diaper Non-Sport Airbag to Sport Airbag Cover Swap
I recently picked up a 2012 X5d base model and the mods have already begun. This isn't necessarily a DIY, but I wanted to illustrate what it looks like to swap the covers so you can cheaply retrofit sport steering wheels. Sport airbag covers can be found for around $70 on eBay. They are just a cover so everything inside has to be swapped.
PLEASE NOTE: Take a mindful approach to removing the bag from the cover. Pull up gently in the right spot and it will come out without any change in the packing. So damn ugly! ![]() ![]() And the swap... I used a dozen wooden sticks to keep the plastic tabs up to release the retainer ring. Pry up with a flat head screwdriver and slid a popsicle stick in each. Gently remove the ring off. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Much better! Someday I'll do a Nappa leather wheel.

The satin chrome trim is attached to the vinyl trim by 4 screws so they will separate. Makes either piece easy to wrap.
