35i or 50i

Hello all, I 've got a 01 4.4 with 75k on it and have poured quite a few dollars into to it recently, all of it age related maintenance gaskets orings etc. The car is in great shape but I've chased this oil leak I've recently developed, 1st did the oil filter housing gasket then the lower oil pan gasket hoping it wasn't the upper one and of course it's the upper one and at this point I've had enough. I want to get into a 2013 before production ends because I'm not that hot on the 3rd gen from what I've seen and even if I was head over heels about it I would never buy the 1st years model. I'm torn between getting a 50i or 35i, having the 4.4 I love the power but it's a really thirsty car. I think long term the 50i is more desirable if I ever plan on selling. What do you guys think.

I would test drive just the 35i. I can guarantee it will be much much faster than your 12 year old 4.4. And maybe that's all you need.

Ditching my 04 4.4 this week for a 13 35i M-Sport, and I plan to DINAN Stage 2 the car after the break-in. Getting the extra 55hp and 100ish lb/ft is enough to offset the loss of the V8, especially with the less thirsty engine. I was enjoying the V8 on the Merritt Pkwy tonight--hope I don't miss it too much.

Be careful though--there is no more customization of 13s allowed. You are going to be stuck with a car in production or already on a lot, somewhere. There is inventory out there, but the choices are dwindling.

Thanks for the advice, about how much will the engine work run you?
I'm just getting over my disgust about this past season, die hard blue shirt fan here.

If you're already worried about fuel don't touch the 50i. Considering you've had your E53 for 12 years, re-selling may not be a huge concern...? I wish the 35i was already out when I bought. I think it's a good mix of everything, but it wasn't even announced so I had no hope.

12 years in a BMW - very nice - there's hope for some of us yet. In terms of these things running so long that is. Hopefully the electronics don't bug out too quickly.

The DINAN stage 2 run $2k. Compared to the factory M-Performance package, it's a no brainer. For about $400 more, you get a lot more performance--on paper at least.

take a look

I would be able to have the Dinan software installed on top of the M package if desired correct? Any engine mods necessary?

There is hope, just realize that once you hit 50-60k on the odo all if not most of the gaskets and rubber parts will start to go. I had both rear air boots replaced, upper and lower CCV gaskets as well as the timing chain cover one, all 8 engine coils, alt o-ring I can go on and on. All inexpensive parts but heavy on the labor and when your off warranty you need a great indy guy you can trust.

No engine mods at all. It's simply software. This can be installed on top of the M-Sport package. Do not get the M-Performance package, as this essentially overwrites that software, and you are effectively wasting money!

I was told to wait until after engine break-in to upgrade. No reason not to listen--I'll just have to hit 1,200 miles faster than I otherwise would have.
