Squeak/squeal

Sounds like a swarm of crickets on meth, a squeaky/squealing sound from the front when I take my foot of the gas and the engine is slowing the car down, I need to be above 35MPH when I start slowing down.
Rims are not hot to the touch (actually not pressing the brakes just legs off the gas pedal) so I think this is something from under the hood or the front wheels.

The only problem is, it happens every other week but once I get to a stop, switch off the ingition and start again. Noise gone for another two weeks. This makes it difficult to diagnose.

Any ideas? Just under 90,000 miles

I had the same issue a couple years back. It turned out to be the water pump. It finally failed a couple months after the squealing started. Mine only did it in freeway driving when I let off on the accelerator. I did have to suffer through the engine eventually overheating and car slowly losing power, but limped into the dealer. Once the water pump was replaced. everything worked great!

Stevs, thanks so much. Yep, this happens mainly on freeway driving when I let my foot of the accelerator. I was thinking the serpentine belt but it kind of makes sense it might be the water pump considering switching off the ignition stops the noise and the water pump is electronic, kind of resets. I am still on the original pump.

Will look at changing both the belt and pump in a couple weeks as I have a long trip in August out of town.

Folks, this might just be symptom to watch out for so you don't get stranded with a busted water pump.

mine just started squealing tonight. it did the same thing (squealing when I let off the gas no matter what my speed is). the noise is pretty loud when my window is down. My water pump was replaced in dec. 2011 and I never had this squeal before it broke so I am not sure if this is a water pump related squeal like the other poster pointed out and since the water pump is electric then why does it only squeal when you let off the gas while moving. I will try to check on it tomorrow using DIS.

Hmm, interesting. Actually I pointed out that switching off the ignition stopped the sound both times. When I stopped, left the engine running and listened for the sound it just continued once I started moving again. Did you get any additional info?

Yes, it's very loud when the window is down, has yours gone away by this morning? It has happened twice in the last month and just goes away.

Still looking at changing the water pump, thermostat and belts next week as I am now 6 years and 90k miles on the original - I am just paranoid the water pump is going to fail and leave me stranded.

first thing I did today was t o check if my water pump is still working and I did the bleeding procedure and water pump was ok. Then I diagnosed if there is any error in the computer using DIS and found out there was one error (DME-intake side of VANOS stiff or mechanically faulty) but I am not sure if this error is related to the squealing problem. DIS did a test on my vanos and everything was on spec. I cleared the error and test drove it and for now the squeal is gone. I am not sure if it will come back again. It will be a wait and see. Also my coolant level was a bit low so I also added some coolant up to at least the minimum level since engine is cold.
