used e70 a good idea?

Hi all,

Before i start, yes i've searched the internet and the forum but there's not really a "buyers guide" for used X5's. Is there a relatively reliable, good used bet E70 X5?

I've been looking at some X5 3.0si/xDrive30i (2008/2009) as this seems to be the most reliable X5 on the market..correct? You have to have an oil refinery (among other things) for the 4.8 and the new N55..lets not even go there.

From what i gather, the older N52 engine is still port injected (no carbon issue/HPFP), not turboed (no failing turbo) and thus seems like a sensible choice.

Yes, i know if i want reliability i should buy a 4runner but I own 4 VW's at the moment and I've been spoiled by german cars..i have no problem fixing things (pretty handy with a wrench) but I do need the car to start/run every day. My VW's have never left me stranded and I stay on top of their maintenance.

So, TLDR: Is there a reliable (for the most part) X5?...X3?

Check if the electric water pump & thermostat were already replaced on those model years. They go out almost at this time (3-5yrs or about 50k miles).

What about the transmissions on these? I know the x3 has a problematic one in the 3.0

There are pages of full threads on the board about 'what could go wrong', 'probs with E70', 'what to look out for in a used E70', etc. ...many not exact thread titles, but lots of opins posted.

If you haven't read this, it is a good overview... see post #6 by Qsilver7 in this link:

http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...dering-x5.html

And, another:
http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...d-options.html

There are also pages of threads on 'auto trans problems'. Some posters have had more than their share of probs, others have gone 100k+ miles prob free. It is hit or miss, but something to be aware of that might go boom, sooner or later.

Some reading on the specific E70 forum should help, too.

The dearth of responses to your post is probably a function of this kind of question coming up on this Juke Box about twice a week, and a check list of potential probs covering all the E70 MYs, options, engine configs, et al, doesn't exist that I know of.

Imo, your later MY picks are probably the right way to go, and lower miles/one owner may help, too. And, fwiw, there are hundreds of posters' cars on this board that have run for years/hundreds of thousands of miles, with very few probs. My '01 3.0 has had barely a handful of non-main repairs over these 12 years. All anecdotal, but your DIY skills and interest should serve you well.
Do some reading and good luck,
mD
