X5M Knock @ High Rpms/under load increased oil consumption/engine malfunction light

Have a 2012 x5m with Renntech 93 octane tune, K&N air filer, regular oil changes, now at 63000 miles.

Beginning to notice an engine knocking, tinkering type noise at high rpms, usually between shifts in excess of 100mph.

Also noting an increased oil consumption, no smoke and no leaks though... If racing or heavy acceleration above 115mph, it will throw a code and enter 'engine malfunction reduced power' mode. happens more with regular octane than 93 octane

Dealer codes showed a cracked #3 spark plug (replaced all and still have problem) and low turbo boost pressure, may have a vacuum leak causing predetonation, or may have oil detonating in the combustion chamber...probbbably not a good thing. any one have any experience with this or can offer any input?

Use 93 gas.
Check for boost leaks
Oil consumption *could* be the beginning of the turbine shaft seals going out.

Edit: When it's redicilously hot out it's not a bad idea to take it easy. Unless that aftermarket tune is conservative...

performance is a bit sluggish when super hot out, i have free 87 gas at the office, its a tough decision to hit the station for $80 in gas at around 3 fill ups a week!

Just weird the knock only happens when under load or between shifts during heavy acceleration. maybe my heads are dirty from using regular gas the first 60k miles? knock goes away when using 93, just concerned about the oil consumption, about 1 quart every 1500 miles. ill try something to maybe clean it out.

I do hear a funky hissing noise when accelerating- could be a boost leak.

At what point did you get a tune for 93 octane and only use 87?

i wouldnt worry about it.

Clearly engine longevity and what is best for the car is secondary to fill up costs and oil consumption... another 10, 15k miles and we'll know whats what.

What is the allowable octane minimum for a renntech 93 tune? What does your tuner (not a BMW dealer) say about this?

This has to be a troll post. Run tune for 93, but only put in 87? You have no idea whats in the tune, whether the knock sensor can retard the timing sufficiently given the fuel/ignition mappings.

if 2012 - take to dealer for warranty and don't ask for ideas or opinions of people not able to really diagnose the problem from a computer keyboard

Yeah, good advice- make sure he gives them all the details on the tune, no doubt he will get excellent warranty support.....
