Replacing Camshaft Position Sensors... Help Please!

Hey guys,

I'm trying to help a relative replace Bank 2 Camshaft Position Sensors on her 2007 4.8i.

I can find any information about doing this on this particular vehicle anywhere. On e46's and e53's it seems to be a really easy job, but for the life of me I can't find where the sensors are. It's been a long day, maybe I'm just blind, but some help would be nice.

On real oem, it shows them here:

RealOEM.com * BMW E70 X5 4.8i Cylinder head cover/Mounting parts

But it's kind of vague where exactly they are? I took that cover off (#2 on diagram) but cant see the sensors under the cover.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Regards,

Alex

I remember replacing one on my e46 M3. It was a totally blind job done by feel. It was located just below the valve cover gasket between the engine and the firewall. On the X5 I would assume you would have to remove the plastic in front of the firewall and possibly the strut tower brace.

Thanks for your reply bro. I went at it again today and I still can't find it. I stuck my iphone back there recorded a video with the light on and moved it all around. All I see is the grey engine case, can't find any trace of these sensors or where they would be... :-/

I ended up finding them. They were covered in a lot of dirt and grease so it was hard to determine the shape of them at first until I cleaned everything off.

If anyone is curious in the future, they aren't actually behind the engine, they are at the very back of the engine but still on top, on the far outside (towards wheels) of each valve cover. They are both beside each other, but one is down a little deeper.

Not too bad of a job with a small ratchet and a flashlight once you know where they are.

Thanks a lot

Next time post a picture from a cell phone... (I know, taking pictures with your hands all messy and in the middle of the job is usually a PITA.) I would be the first CPS replacement pic on an E70 posted here....
