Passenger Side Mirror Motor Replacement for Broken Tilt
I have seen the complete mirror replacement details, but I only need to replace the motor for the tilt function. Thanks!! |

Would it not tilt for you going reverse and when you tried to aim it with buttons?
Mine can be adjusted left and right but not up and down. And it would not tilt when going in reverse. A local shot asks for $355 in labor and parts, less than 10% below of what dealer quoted you... |

I would like to expand my question a little bit.
How many motors there are in the outside mirror housing? Is it a single motor that controls 4 directions or are there two motors? I'm just thinking if there is one motor and my mirror goes left and right, then it is not the motor's fault that the mirror does not tilt. |

Just fixed mine...
I had the exact same problem a few weeks ago and repaired it myself, based on some feedback from a few people on this forum. Mirror would go left/right but not up/down.
FYI, there is only one motor for all 4 directions. Here is a video on removing the cover and the mirror glass. You only care about the first 35-40 seconds or so... The rest you don't need to worry about. 001 BMW X5 HCE-C500 TOPVIEW camera installation - YouTube After you get the glass off, its only 4 screws and you can remove the motor and replace it. Here is where I bought mine ($170 including shipping). Thanks a lot for the detailed information, 95wildtt!
How did you diagnose the problem and narrow it down to the motor? |

Lots of people have had the same problem. Do a search...

Only one motor? That would be interesting, getting a motor to go in four directions. Mine had one motor module/cassette, which had two electric motors in it. The motors weren't individually replaceable. The motors were fine in mine. It was the position sensor that failed. There is one sensor for left/right, and one for up/down.

..from E53 forum but probably applicable
http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...d-writeup.html
it very well may be as simple as the sensors being dirty and needing cleaning as in post #5 above. ( in that post it doe show two separate motors [with grease which may have contributed to the sensors getting dirty over time]) I plan on tackling this in the next month, will let you know how it goes

Today, I diagnosed my problem a little bit more precisely. It does not seem to be the sensor. With the mirror removed and both actuators travel full length back and forth. However, the tilt actuator makes some noise around the middle of the travel going in either direction. With the mirror on, the upward tilt can go all the way to the maximum height, but the downward tilt stops right when the clicking noise begins. For this position it can only be moved by hand.
I suspect it fails due to dust and worn lubrication/gears. Then, the electrical part detects a mechanical blockage of the tilt motion and sets a flag in the computer that no longer tries to adjust the position until the position is changed by an external force. I could not take the motor assembly apart. I am probably looking at replacing it as a whole. |

Well, looks like I have the problem as well. When car is put into reverse, the mirror droops down VERY slowly and then just stays there. Pushing the controller to tilt it up doesn't do anything. I have pushed the mirror back up and now have the switch set to the passenger mirror so that it won't try and go down when I go in reverse anymore. Doubt I'll take it apart as I usually have it set to the passenger mirror anyways since the tilting down is more of an annoyance to me than anything.
