Bad catalytic converters, 80,000 warrranty will cover.
So my CEL have been going on and off the last week, and sometimes it sounds like marbles rattling around when I'm idling at the stop light. I read that it might be bad catalytic converters, so I took the car to the dealership for diagnosis.
They have confirmed both catalytic converters are bad and will cover all repair expenses. I am so relieved. Luckily I brought it in now cause I'm at 79,200 miles. If it failed after 80,000 miles, I would have been SOL. Mine's a 2007 4.8i. Just putting this information out there, just in case others are in my shoes. |

Sweet.
There is a reason cats fail at such low miles... do you tend to get black specs around the exhausts? A |

now that you mentioned it, I do see black specs around the exhausts. What does that mean?

A rich running car can run rich for years, and place a load of unburned hydrocarbons on the CAT. Over time this can cause failure.
While all modern cars have a DME/OBD that monitors certain parameters, there are odd situations where these dont work properly. Like a bad thermostat where the engine always runs cool and hte car never hits closed loop control- or if it does, it does to only after an hour... 99+ percent of car owners look no further than "no CEL and seat of the pants feels good", so these things can exist for years. |

Bad Cat
Just got my 2012 diesel back from dealer. CEL indicated a bad cat. Service advisor said it was the third one he'd seen. Turns out there may have been a bad lot from supplier. Pleased the warranty was there. Expensive parts.

Huge recalls in 2010/11 cars over this. NOX sensors, etc...reporgramming.... My 10 had the same CEL code, replaced the SCR cat, same issue returned..then they replaced sensors...then they replaced software. Then I lemoned it. I dearly HOPE it is a bad lot. That would be a best case scenario, IMO A |

I got mine back after few days ago. Parts alone shows approx. $2700. I don't know how much labor would have cost, but I'm just glad everything was covered by the 8/80,000 warranty.
