valve cover replacement

How much trouble is it to change the valve cover on the 3.0 gas engine E70. Had the O2 wiring harness catch fire the other day driving to work with a bunch of oil on the exhaust side of the engine. Shop thinks it is the ccv system that spewed the oil due to the below zero temps we've had here (Illinois). I was able to drive it to the shop without any issues, after dousing the fire with snow.

It is operating normal now with no leaks. I would be inclined to replace the gasket at least but not sure it would make sense to replace the cover if the leak was due to the weather. They quoted a price of $900. Seems like pretty straight forward job. Anything difficult to it should I decide to do it myself?

Ok, going to at least get the gaskets replaced. Only question now is do I pay for a new cover. Hate to throw 400 at a part I don't need.

If the cover isnt damaged, why replace it???? They can look at it and see if it is OK.

Why do you think it is bad?

You DIY? Ive never done one on these, but plenty of others- never hard, sometimes a bunch of hoses, etc to remove....

I don't know if it's bad. That was the recommendation from the shop to replace it but I haven't been able to find any articles or info about the separator going bad. If it was due to the cold weather then replacing the cover isn't going to matter, unless they've updated the design.

I had oil in a couple of my spark plug wells when I recently did the 100k service so I believe it would be a good idea to at least replace the gaskets and seals, especially after this happened.
