Question MPG of 2012-2013 X5 3.5 gas vs. diesel

We are looking to perhaps sell our 08 4.8 sport and pick up a 12 or 13 X5 3.5. But we are wondering what the typical MPG people have been seeing for the 2012-2013 X5 3.5 in diesel vs gas. Sorry if this topic has been discussed before but I searched the forum already and could not find any posts covering this.

Thanks in advance

I'm getting about 20.6 on my '12 35i. I also had an '08 4.8 that I traded a few months ago that got in the 17 range.

Can always spot a new guy . It's 35i and 35d, not "3.5". The engines are 3.0L.

Do not make a purchase decision solely based on MPG. Drive both vehicles.

I've had my 2013 X5 xDrive35i (gas) for about 2 months.
This is my experience with it in a few fuel-ups.
The better results are highway trips.
Notice the iDrive info differs a little bit with the actual numbers.
MPG depends a lot on the driver, I can get better mileage than my wife, because I concentrate on it more.

Using iDrive with my 35d I can get in the low 30s on the hiway and I haven't reset it for about a month now and we average about 25.4mpg with a mix of hiway/city driving. On the other hand my X5M averages around 18-20mpg

21 - 23 in city
25 to 28 on highway - my mileage gets better at 80 than at 70

2011 35d

I love this car, but oy vey that damn creaking in the rear hatch is worse with each day. I think BMW needs to ditch the hatch design and start over.

The on board computer tells me in mixed driving I'm around 22-23 mpg diesel. I haven't don't the math at each fill up to know of the computer is optimistic or not.

With that said, my "mixed driving" is some urban but not pure city stop and go. My understanding is the more highway you do the better diesel is.

Don't know the sell your car/buy a car 'pricing', but imo, tossing a car for another car for 'fuel savings' is a huge leap, and mostly mental.

The cost to you needs to be considered, then add in diesel vs premo gas, expected mpg, time/miles of ownership, etc.

Unless one is going from a gas engine dualie truck to a Prius or other hybrid, and unless one is able to get a real 'deal' on the trade in/new car, it is difficult to justify the 'savings'...
All is moot if one simply wants a newer/different car.

Keeping the X seems to be on my mind. It's paid for and I can't afford another one. leasing a 328d sounds like something that would be fun.
I keep telling myself it would be the best of both worlds.....

Gas vs Diesel

There's many factors to be considered to determine which car is more economical.
To begin, there's an always fluctuating price for a gallon of fuel, and it depends where you get it. It could be as much as $0.50 cents difference between a gallon of Premium and a gallon of Diesel.
Next, the percentage of highway miles will make a big difference, higher highway miles, more efficient a diesel vehicle.
The driver could make a huge difference, not two drivers will get the same mileage with the same vehicle.
The original price of the vehicle.
And the potential maintenance and repair cost.
I'm sure salesmen could make an argument in favor of either one, depending on his personal incentives.
Just my $.02
