X5 50i Terrible Grinding Noise & Hot Engine Warning

Hi All!

I recently had the turbo coolant lines (including return block) done on my '12 50i. On the hour long drive home from the dealer I got a warning that 'Engine Temperature Hot' and to drive moderately to cool it down.

I drove moderately home, thinking it would clear, and when I got out and turned the car off, I could hear what sounded like either boiling coolant or oil and some pump near the front passenger side whirring and grinding in pulses.

Here's a YouTube video of the noise: https://youtu.be/lwgzqSwg7wA

I'm thinking it's maybe one of the water pumps to the turbos, or maybe the one to the engine, given the location. Before I have it towed back, I'm wondering if anyone has some insight or has experienced something similar!

Actually sounds like it may be the pump for the intercooler system, check the small water tank directly in front of the engine and make sure it is full, you may also, if you have a scan tool, be able to test the intercooler pump directly and see if it grinds.

I believe the tank on the right fender well is for the engine and turbos directly and the small tank on the front of the engine is for the intercoolers specifically, both have their own separate pump.

I assumed the dealer towed it back on Thursday AM. Id have demanded at the very least a diagnosis by close of business on Friday.

Agreed! - With everything that they had just done, I would have been front of the line for diagnosis or I would have been an unhappy, very vocal customer...
