any DIYs on replacing the alternator on an 08 E70 with 4.8i

Hi,

I'm trying to replace the alternator on my 08 x5 with 4.8i and it looks like one of the bolts is hidden behind an accessory pulley connected to the alternator. Problem is I cant get the pulley out. since it looks like there is a bracket in the way that looks like is connected to the power steering pump. I assume that needs to be removed probably from underneath the car. what a pain.

Has anyone ever replaced their alternator? any tips?
Thanks.

Using gregg3gs' post about the valley coolant leak I was able to remove the bracket that is over the power steering pump to allow access to the idler pulley attached to the alternator. Removing the fan shroud assembly and the belt tensioner, and a couple more clips and I was able to get the alternator out.
Tomorrow is reassembly.

Thank you gregg3gs!

I had to remove that stupid bracket just to replace my drive belt. What an idiotic design!

I put everything back, but had the hardest time with the alternator, I couldn't get it to fit back. I was able to get the bolt on the top no prob, but the bolt to the left (longer bolt) I would have thought needed to go where there is a hole for a bolt. I just could position it there. I bolted it and it seems tight but its just below that area. I started the car sounded fine belt seems fine reved it, seems fine, but when I drive I get a vibration, almost seems its connected to steering. something seems off. with car running looking at the belt and pulleys everything seems normal. I wonder if I forced something on the power steering pump when I was trying to get the alternator in position. Waiting for car to cool down before disassembly again.

acloockwrk: (you got message)... I do believe there are two bolts holding this (maybe three)
One of the openings is for bracket that mounts to the front face.

Here are few pictures for you.

Thanks greggegs.

It's the left bolt I cant line up. the alternator wont swing to the left, it looks like the power cable is hitting the side of the engine bay and wont shift over anymore, I've taken it out 4 times and with the same results. Which way is your power cable routed? There are 2 way to mount it.

The power cable should be facing back, and be on top right.

I think what you are experiencing is a tight fit onto the mounting post on the left.
I remember I had to wedge it into place with some force.

You could try to use a screw driver (thin phlilps to line up the left bolt first, rest will follow)

also, did you attach the power cable before or after you mounted the alternator. I cant see enough room to do it after.

You attach the power cable and reinstall the rubber cup with the alternator pulled forward. There is just enough of slack to do this.
Afterwards slide the alternator inwards and onto the post (a better term is wedge the darn thing inwards).
I remember I had to reset the way I slid it inwards as it was hitting something and I could not align all the bolts.

I reattached the cable differently but now it looks like there is not enough slack to slide back, I need to look at it again. there are 3 ways to mount it.
