therein lies the question: I think the doors were locked, she popped the trunk and dropped her bag with keys in. but whether she opened trunk with key remotely or by hand i dont know. all i know is i tried to simulate the scenario and out of the 3 tries failed miserably to lock the trunk with keys inside.

Oddly enough my wife did the exact same thing last week with our 2010.
The EXACT same thing, doors were locked and she dropped the bags in the back and pushed the liftgate close button, locked out. |

Her key is with her phone that got dropped in the hatch with the bags.
My rule of thumb is keep keys in my pants, if I loose my pants I have bigger issues than no key

My wife left her key in her purse on the front seat of her 2012 550xi, got out of the car, shut her driver's door, went to open my 2 year old son's door and the doors locked.
To exacerbate that particular failure, BMW could not remotely unlock the car which sat in the middle of a Target parking lot in a major metro area. I drove 20 miles home from my office to fetch a spare key. Utter failure. She now has to wear her BMW key around her neck on a lanyard (literally) to ensure this doesn't happen again. +++ Last year, my 2013 X5 50i was in the service bay of our AD with the key sitting on the dashboard when the service tech addressed the driver's door.. it locked and it took them about an hour to get into the car. BMW has many opportunities around this (key proximity awareness) - and I'm being very kind by not elaborating further.

Yeah, like when it would start raining and the car would roll down all the windows and open the sunroof? And BMW insisted the owner musta forgot- not covered by warranty.
