What is the next big ticket item going to be?

Hi guys,
I have a cursed 2008 X5 3.0si, and I had to take it to the mechanic for:

- Water pump failure ($1700 repair, one month after warranty expired)
- Two leaking air struts ($700 each)
- Battery and alternator ($1400)
- Front left strut mount ($400)

The car is only 47000 miles and you have no idea how pissed I am with this piece of junk.
I wanted to trade in the car early next year but with all the money I put on it I consider keeping it longer.

So my question is: what should I expect as the next big ticket item to be, considering the mileage?
I guess another strut mount and then? Bearings? Rotors? Known common failures?
Thanks for your opinion.

Not everybody can DIY, especially if you don't have a garage and you are not that good with a wrench in your hand.

I agree with DIY statement, but do hear you, not all can.
But why did you get the BMW perform the service?
Fina a local BMW shop (independent BMW service shop) and they will save you about half, from what I see so far.

Any who, I digressed.
The next two big things:
- alternator bracket gasket (about 900 outside of the dealer), this $7.00 gasket will fail if not over time then by the time you get closer to and pass 80k
- valley pan gasket (parts alone are over 600 but if you choose better parts then 900). This will fail by the time you are kitting about 80 to 90K (you will see coolant dripping from back of transmission, especially when you park up the hill.)

Good luck to you.

Bmw fixed just the water pump (my bad but my wife got stalled and I wasn't in town) all the rest I did it through an indie shop, after I got few estimates elsewhere.
Thanks for your opinion.
I'm also really concerned about transmission, I've read so many horror stories about that.

Not all engines have alternator bracket gasket and valley pan gasket Some are less cursed than others
OP has a 3.0si which is times better than the V8.

Dont keep the car without an extended warranty if you aren't Mr. Fix it. The repairs can be stupid expensive.

I thought (and still think) it was ridiculous to get an extended warranty on a 30000 miles Bmw (the mileage I had when factory warranty expired). I owned an old e36 once and I drove 100k miles with no problem whatsoever.
Lesson learned, I will never buy a Bmw again. Next is going to be a Japanese suv.

We all say that until we test drive those lifeless hunks of shit. My extended has paid for itself already and makes the repairs bearable.

I get your point but reliability is too important to me. Bmw used to be a truly German piece of mechanical art, not anymore.
Japanese cars might be not that sexy, but at least they are reliable.
