I would take out the knob/controller and thoroughly clean it with contact cleaner. See if that does it.

I'm thinking the idrive is a module under the knob or located somewhere else on the car. I couldn't find a thread relating to the replacement of the module. Do I have to pull the console apart or just remove the knob to gain access to the module?
