Blast from the Past.....Old Member looking at 5.0

Hey guys

Not sure is here from the old days (4.4, 4.6 and 4.8is).

I am looking at a high mileage 11 5.0 X5. Has had regular service. All looks in order except for the miles.

I know I have read of an engine issue with the N63. But BMW is covering these things.......

Any feedback would be appreciated.

The 50i is a 4.4 liter.

Having cleared that up, how many miles is 'high mileage'?

81k Miles.

You will have to forgive me as this the first step back into this area in a while.

BMW is performing a campaign, it is unknown what the future holds though. If you get one I would say a warranty is required but with 81k, that is not much left of one and I do not know where you would even get one that would be worth anything.

Some owners have had issues and they had less than 50k, even after BMW has performed the campaign, what happens in the next 50k, do components start to fail again or are the new ones better and won't suffer the same fate? At this point, no one knows.

From what I have read this "campaign" covers a lot of components. Almost like a shotgun approach to a repair.

They have used past warranty claims and they are replacing components that were involved in those claims. I took mine in and they had to replace only three items in the campaign as the rest were already replaced. Care to guess why, because they had issues earlier one and were replaced already. The HPFP and injectors were done previously. So they just needed to do the MAFS, low fuel pressure line, some crankcase lines plus a few seals.

So I really wouldn't call it a shotgun approach. Before it went in I was getting a CEL and engine malfunction messages. So everything but the timing chain has been replaced at some point.

I've been reading a few threads on this and frankly wouldn't touch an N63 at this point. It makes the e53 transmission sagas seem like a minor nuisance....

WOW haven't seen that name in awhile hope all is well!

I just stepped into a X6, a 2012 3.5, still have the e53, won't ever get rid of it.

BMW dealers are hooking the cars into their diagnostics and reading all sorts of logs, and based on those logs, BMWNA is replacing parts as necessary. I've heard a lot of the parts are on backorder, no surprise there given the volume of this recall.

Part of me says the engine has already reached 80k that you should be fine, but how about you grab the VIN and have a willing service advisor run the VIN and see what the warranty history was on it?

As you know German cars can be quite needy, especially high mileage ones.

Hope all is well Tim.

Chris

Chris

I was going to make a call on this today. There seems to be plenty of variables to the issue. And I was thinking as you are about it maybe being past its "issues". Carfax shows a fairly good service history.

Thanks gang!
