Buying 2008 X5 3.0 what to look for

Hi,
New to the forum and looking to buy a slightly used 2008 X5 with 3.0 engine. It has 40k miles. Condition wise it is spotless. But when I read the forum and read the reviews, I see lot of reliability issues. But looks like most are with V8 engines.
Any feedback and what to watch out for be very helpful.
Thanks

Loaded question. Many guys here have had years of hassel-free driving while others have reported various issues relating specifically to the 3.0. The best advice I could offer is to look for one still covered under motor plan with as low mileage as you can afford. Any issues you may experience will then be the dealers responsibility. Personally, I own a 2008 3.0 diesel and my mechanical troubles thus far have been: Replacement of rear air suspension bags which I consider routine after almost 7 years of service and 100 000km. Also, transfer case control module blew but that was due to a water leak in the boot of the car...the same water leak could potentially have done far more damage as I discovered it had soaked my amp and fuse panel...stripped, cleaned, and reassembled...still holding thumbs 5 months later.
So apart from a water leak my particular vehicle has been a real champ.

Yup,much less problems with the 6 cylinder engine.40 k miles is good because it is a low mileage, but the car was driven some and probably not sitting for a long periods of time. Also whatever problem sit had from the factory were mostly corrected by this point. So the standart PPI and some car history investigation should suffice.

I always ask the owner to give me a ride in the car to see how their driving habit is and I ask questions like how far the work just to get an idea on how much the car was driven. the car was probably bought in 07 as an 08 model so 7 years and 40k miles is around 6k a year. so u would have to try and find out the history on how much the car was actually used. u never know if the car was sitting for a while, maybe because the owner didn't have money for a repair or maybe the car was driven only like 2 miles a day then u would have to worry about oil condensation and other related problems

I've had pretty much every common issue with the 3.0 engine.

Short list that I remember off the top of my head:

-Back bumper had to be replaced because of defective brackets holding it up. You can see ripples in the bumper when looking at it from the back
-Rear brake light housing had to be replaced because of water in them. BMW has now upgraded the materials used to seal the light housing better
-Plastic radiator cracked. Well known issue
-Water pump died. Well known issue around every 60k miles
-Rear suspension air bags died. I consider this just routine maintenance. You can see if the car is "sagging" when parked which will tell you if the bags have deflated.

I'm sure there are more, but I don't remember them off of the top of my head

I have owned my x5 for about a year and a half now. I bought it with 55k miles and now it has about 76k miles. Upon purchase I demanded that the dealer give me a copy of the entire service history of the vehicle. I read through all 6 pages of the history and my car has been taken really good care of. It pays to find a very well kept car with low miles. THis is the second BMW I've purchased from the dealer and I have a good relationship with my sales associate who has hooked me up twice now. The only thing I've had to do thus far is replace the coolant expansion tank as it cracked last year on the 1st day it got down to 30 degrees. These are the things I know I'll have to replace soon:
- Valve cover gasket (Every now and then I get a burning smell through my air vents and I see some oil residue on the head shield above the exhaust manifold.)
- Thrust arm/lower control arm bushings (These are common items that wear on these cars)

2009 3.0 - Radiator at 39K and Water Pump at 56K. Water pump is a bad one because you probably won't get any advance warning. Works fine one day, next morning drive away fine. About 2 miles later fan running very fast and very loud then limp mode. Lots of fun in the middle of the I90 floating bridge. Luckily it was 5:00 am so traffic was light.

But I still like the vehicle.

My panorama sun roof opening mechanisms broke just a few days before the warranty expired. Dodged that bullet.

Water pump went out of warranty. (Repaired myself.)

Rear air springs went out of warranty. (Ouch.)

Had a coil on plug go out.

Not bad. (Knocking on wood.)
