YES, that is the key question...I've not worked with any local INDY shops, I would guess they would charge $100? The dealer probably charges $150 min 1 hour..., but all I've read indicates that the coding MUST be done to preserve the correct charging rate and battery capacity.

Just picked up the Bosch battery.

It's a tank. 49lbs, 185 minutes reserve capacity, 1080 cranking amps @ 32 deg F!

This thing is more commercial truck battery then SUV battery.

That's why they put two handles on it...two person install....but adds to the traction in the snow

Really.

Worth noting, battery has a manufacture date stamp of Feb/15!

Hooked it up to my garage charger and it showed 100% charge, 12.9 volts!

Nice work...maybe I pushed the GO on my battery swap too soon.

NOTE: I was looking at the BMWHAT APP iTunes page and noted the NEW version now includes the Battery Selection coding. In all the discussions, there are two settings: NEW BATTERY RESET (changes the charge rate) and BATTERY TYPE (I guess you could put in different sizes?). Not sure yet if the update includes both settings?

Here is what it says:

- Service Reset is NOW available (charged In-App)
- iOS 8 support
- New codings esp. for light and Minis
- Parameter-Monitoring for more engines
- Battery registration for many models (charged In-App)
- Improved diagnosis of F-models
- Italian language localization (thanks to Benny)
- Unit conversion
- Coding of F-models is planned for 2015. We are developing a new adapter to make this possible.

Once I get the APP running on my E70 I'll post the info.

BATTERY TYPE would be selection of FLOODED lead acid or SEALED lead acid.

Both Bosch batteries (flooded lead acid & AGM) for the BMW X5 application are sealed.

Both also have the external vent tube.

There are two categories of batteries: flooded and sealed.

Flooded lead acid cells have a vent to the atmosphere used to vent gasses formed during operation and/or on stand and to limit pressure buildup inside the cell.

In the sealed category, there are several different styles: absorbent glass mat (AGM), gel and valve regulated lead acid (VRLA).

Now, some flooded lead acid cells also contain a valve or plug to prevent or limit the amount of liquid electrolyte that can escape the cell and the pressure that can build up inside the cell. These cells are often erroneously referred to as 'sealed' and advertised as 'maintenance free' but in fact require similar maintenance as do the openly vented cells. Despite the sealing plug or valve, they are still considered flooded and not sealed.

I didn't design the Bosch batteries, only reading the fact that both batteries are defined as "sealed", and "vented outside of vehicle".

See notes on batteries in link....
