First hiccup with our 2010 35d (CIC Indicates Max Oil Level and Suggests Service)

Was checking the vehicle status in the CIC/iDrive and noticed the warning that the oil level is pegged at max and is too high. Checked the level with the dipstick and it is normal so I am assuming it's the sensor. Vehicle has 142,000 miles. No other errors with the vehicle. Have put ~6000 miles on it in the 6 months we've owned it. No other complaints so far.

Going to order the OEM sensor at $155 pending any input from the collective wisdom here. I am relatively new to the e70 and have a lot of learning to do.

Ok,
Let me try to help you...

When was he last time the oil was changed?
Mileage and how many months ago?
Who changed your oil?
Is you x35d parked on level ground?
Fuel economy been normal for ya?

142k and no issues with any of the following?
1. Nox sensors
2. Throttle valve
3. EGR cooler
4. SCR metering valve?
5. Active/Passive tank?

I find that hard to believe.

Oil was last changed about 1000-2000 miles ago at the dealer... which will be the last time that happens @ $280ish (included DEF refill which was not requested). It is not parked on level ground when parked for the evening (our driveway is inclined), but the dipstick measurement was taken on level ground. Fuel economy has been decent. >22mpg mixed driving with 25-27mpg on the highway. I use fuellog to calculate every tank to look for anomalies.

We only purchased @ 136k. I do not know the entire history of the vehicle. I know the EGR cooler was replaced very recently by the owner prior to our purchase. The vehicle seems to have been well taken care of by the previous owner (a small dealer) who used it as his travel vehicle to go to and from Louisiana where his family lives. I was skeptical but he gave me the number of the indy he uses who verified all the work done that the dealer claimed and provided invoices.

I could see how you would get that impression from the thread title. I edited it to more accurately represent the issue at hand.

It's most likely a failed sensor, but I wanted to query the experts here and see if there was something else I should check first.

You mean you are getting the OE sensor from BMW?

Im not sure there is an OEM version (aka the same as OE but sold under the OEM brand name)

It's a BMW branded sensor (makes it OEM, correct?). FCP has them for $155.

No, OE.

Quote:
OE is Original Equipment: aka 'BMW Original Parts"; aka "What you buy at the BMW dealer with a BMW label on it"

OEM is Original Equipment Manufacturer... EITHER 'the company that made the OE part" or.... 'A part this is identical to the OE part, but is sold by the OEM under their own label,"

OEM is NOT WHAT YOU BUY AT THE DEALER.

Gotcha. I always thought that the above referenced OEM was referred to as OES (Original Equipment Supplier). And that OEM was the original vehicle manufacturer branded part.

Learn something new all the time.
