Why inspect timing chains for premature wear (they call it 'stretch' which is a misnomer, promulgated to avoid people concluding "well if the chain has premature wear what about ALL the other pieces in the motor???)

I particularly like this nonsense quote from the article:

Insiders at BMW in Germany say the oil consumption happens to customers who don't ever flog their powerful, turbocharged V8s hard enough to fully break them in. Ironic.

Plays into the preconceived bias that 'the way we do things in germany is always superior'....

R/T gains access by promulgating what manufacturers want them to write. Writers are not necessarily very smart in terms of engineering backgrounds, nor are they motivated to dig into engineering...if they want a trip to germany and a date on the 'ring, they listen to their "insiders" and write the story as they are told it. Just easier to go with the flow.

I agree with the timing chain wear, and your thoughts on the German psychology!
But the oil consumption has been mentioned a few times, and it seems strange that R/T would pull that idea out of thin air?

BMW has designed a charging system which seeks to recharge a battery as fast as it can be based on .... agm or not, amp hours, and battery age? But this max charging rate stresses the battery. Reason why they do this is to cover for the case where a user drives for short times over and over. What they are apparently seeking is to be able to run the under hood fans to cool hot turbos which may become damaged if not cooled etc.

So BMW is pulling cars in early and replacing batteries that are on their way out from discharge and recharge.

Your assertions appear to have no basis in reality. We know for a fact that the BMW system purposefully does NOT immediately charge a battery after an overnight sit and cold start, to reduce load on the alt and improve mileage/emissions, and instead the intelligent system waits for the engine to warm and enter cruising mode before it loads the alternator. This is precisely why modern BMWs driven for short drives kills the battery- they never get fully charged.

You assertion that they charge super fast and that kills them is nonsense.


I do note in your other post, you knwo a "battery czar" ...BUT you say you need more information.... I will reply there, but why add your nonsense here to this thread if you dont have the full story?

You spend $60-70k on a car and complain about $200-300 that you have to fork every two years for a battery?
Replacing the battery every two oil changes is a requirement as long as the car is under warranty and done for free by BMW. Out of warranty no one is forcing people to replace the battery.

Sure out of warranty you can ignore changing the battery every two oil changes...
And pray your battery doesn't die a premature death leaving you stranded...
Which is why the concern-
I'd be concerned if I spent $60k to $70k on a vehicle that kills batteries-

There has never been a battery replaced at a BMW dealer in the USA for under $300

Replacing a battery every two oil changes (for me this would be an annual replacement) is retarded. There is no car on the market with such a poorly engineered system that requires this- so if the car costs $80k or $1M,it is insulting that the mfg has screwed up so royally.


Likewise the elitist intimation of 'if you cant afford it perhaps you shouldnt own it' is ignorant.
