ADBLUE/DEF replacement
1st time caller, long time listener.....lol I have a 2015 X5d. I had my DEF refilled when I had an oil change at my BMW service place (not dealer). They charged me $165 for 2 gallons. Seemed a little HIGH since online says I could buy for ~$30/gal. They indicated that they had to "re-calibrate the computer when adding". Question: Is it as simple as just "adding the DEF"? It seems simple. I know that there's a computer that says "X # of miles left" if it runs way low, but does the computer "have" to be reset every time adding DEF? Thoughts?? |

DEF is regulated here in Europe, it’s about US$1 per litre and we just buy refills from commodity garages or part stores. Go ahead and buy the filler which is convenient - I use a 2 litre bottle which screws onto the filler cap then you push the bottle down to fill it. I then fill the smaller bottle from a 10 litre can, for convenience, to top up.
Don’t be tempted to stockpile DEF as it can degrade, keep it out of heat/sunshine. My 40d uses about 10 litres for 12,000 to 15,000 miles. The level sensor picks up change in my car and recalibrates range without any external computer intervention. It is as simple as just adding standard DEF for my F15. |
