IMO BMW is missing a big opportunity to own the diesel SAV performance sector of the US market.
We own an 11 X5 5.0 Twin Turbo and the motor is tons of fun However, I bought a 13 Touareg TDI 8 speed for work and it is a really really nice car - way better than the 35D mainly because of the 8 speed, but the VW 3.0 TDI also has great power delivery - definitely has some fun factor. The opportunity to build more "fun" into diesel SAVs is there for manufacturers. The lighter BMW X5 F15 with an M50D motor and 8 speed tranny would be pretty much irresistible to me!

I understand the attraction of a high performance diesel, but I think that BMW blew it by offering too much power in their diesel lineup.
Look at the three series. It is where BMW sells the most volume, and makes their money. They tried to sell a 335d, and had to give up, after lackluster sales. If they had brought out a 320d, with much better mileage, they could have sold many times the volume than they did. They could have made their money on the option packages, same as their other models, but with an efficient engine. A 335d wasn't much better that a gasoline version, compared to what could have been. Now they are talking about 4 cylinder diesels in the SUV lineup. That is where I think they can do well, not so much the 50d variants, which are a niche product. If you can afford an X5 50, the fuel price difference isn't much given the cheap fuel in the US.

It used to be in the past that it was a no brainer that I would replace my BMW with another BMW. Next year we are going to replace our X5 and I am not convinced I am going to stick with BMW....a lot of really good options out there now...

With diesel fuel prices where they are at and a promised increase in mileage for the 35i, I think it will be challenging to sell them without incentives. I owned the 35d and it wasn't close to the performance of the 35i. Factor in the gas prices and fuel was a wash.
If I were towing I would get wanting the 35d, otherwise I just can't see it. The 35i is an incredible (and fast) engine.
