Arrow BMW Recalling X5 to Fix Door Locks

BMW of North America is recalling 6,400 2014 model-year X5 sports activity vehicles to fix the rear side door locks so they’re sufficiently childproof, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports.

The recall covers X5 SAV vehicles manufactured from Dec. 12, 2013, through March 10, 2014, and equipped with the soft close automatic option. In these vehicles, the rear side door lock mechanisms may not have been manufactured to correct tolerances. When the inside door handle is pulled, the previously engaged child safety lock can disengage, NHTSA said. As a result, the faulty lock might allow a child to pull the door handle twice and open the door, posing a safety risk.

BMW dealers will inspect these rear door locks and make any necessary replacements free of charge. The recall is set to get under way this month.

Vehicle owners can reach BMW Recall Hotline at 1-800-525-7417.

Avoidable problems associated with needless complexity.

You want soft closing doors? Try not slamming them. Paying extra for these sorts of features just buys into these types of issues.

Come on JCL, people use to say that years ago about electric windows and various extras that we come to expect. If manufactures offer these extras it's on them to make sure abuse testing has been done and that the parts are installed properly. If they get it wrong own it, fix it, learn from it.

I understand though, give us a people car. 4 wheels, stick shift, manual roll up windows, no radio and that's it.....

For me it's the opposite. My kids don't push hard enough when closing the door so it latches but doesn't close all the way. The soft close solves that nicely, especially if the doors are locked and they can't just open and reclose. I didn't order it specifically as it came with the premium seating package which we got mostly for the ventilated seats. I probably wouldn't have ordered the soft close doors by itself however.

That site doesn't work too well. I currently have two BMWs with active recalls (the X5 for the soft-close door issue and our E93 for VANOS bolts), and neither of them show up on this site. I get the response: "There are no recalls for your vehicle" for both.

Did you get a letter from BMW saying your vehicle was being recalled?
