I'm in the UK - can anyone compare this car to any current UK available brands which have something similar? Or, is the idea that the X6 will replace one of the current models?
I asked my dealer the same question in addition to when will the car be available, what engines are we talking about, any pictures available yet (nice try I guess but didn't work), ... .

He came back with an intersting yet honest answer: He told me that the purpose of the X6 is for BMW to have a Porsche Cayenne (Turbo) killer in its ranks. Therefore, the X6 will come with a boosted V8 and/or the V10 from the M5/M6. In other words, the X6 will lean more towards the M product.

Since I already have an M6 and since we are looking for a set of wheels for the Mrs. and the kids he advised the X5 4.8i which provides plenty of room and enough power to play around if you want to. He also told me that the X6 will have far less room than the X5.

What really made us go for the X5 was the waiting time for the X6 and still a lot of things uncertain (the majority of the specs).

Having said all this, I do believe that the X6 will be a success but you can't compare it to the X5 in terms of profit and volume. If the X6 will be leaning towards an M product you are looking at € 120k to € 130k bringing it close to the € 145k I had to come up with for my M6 and €20k to €30k more than the fully loaded X5 I ordered now.

Exciting times with all these new models launched. BMW keeps us busy and I kind of like that.

I asked my dealer too about X6 info and he replied "You tell me, you are always ahead of me in these things"

Here are the specs by Autobild.
  • X6 - coupe version of X5
  • LxWxH = 4875mm x 1990mm x 1676mm (X5: 4854 x 1933 x 1766) 7
  • 70% parts shared with X5
  • 5cm lower sitting position than in X5
  • less cargo space (max 1400 L vs max 1750 L in X5)
4+1 seats (the 5th one is provisional)
  • Initially 4 engnes will be offered: 3.0d (235HP), 3.0sd (286HP), bi-turbo 3.0si (306HP), bi-turbo 4.8si (408HP), next-gen V10 X6 M
  • 6-speed auto gearbox with shifting paddles (later also 8-speed auto from F01 7er)
  • Adaptive Drive + Active Steering available
  • xDrive with DPC standard (= Dynamic xDrive or DxD)
  • Rear axle air-suspension
  • HUD, Intelligent Lighting System, Rear Camera
better performance & driving characteristics than facelifted Cayenne
  • Price range: €55k - €70k
  • Expected average sales of 26k units per year during the entire life-cycle

That is what I asked my dealer as well. Seems the majority of production is destined for the US market. Since Belgium is a rather small market BMW limits the number of X5's allocated for the Belgian market. On top of that they put priority on the diesels as these are very popular here. As a result, the slots allocated for the 4.8i are very limited.

Meanwhile, I have received news from the dealer that the build date for the car has been brought forward to November 07. Adding 6 to 8 weeks of transportation should bring the delivery date forward to January 08. Better than March 08 but still a long wait.

I had an E53 X5 and was one of the first to order in Belgium when they came out and had to wait a staggering 7 months as well. Seems things didn't get any better.

That is why I was rather scared passing on the X5 and going for the X6 as they gave me a schedule of September 08 with possible delays. That was too long for us anyway + the agruments from the dealer (see post above) made us decide the X5 was the better choice for the Mrs. and the kids.

Some commonalities with what my dealer told me despite the fact that the price range is way off compared to the info he gave me. The X6 should be priced higher than the X5 and from the info above that doesn't seem to be the case.

You know what, I'll go with what you say LeMansX5 because I have noticed that you are very much up to speed on what is going on or what is about to happen. Please keep sharing all your info with us.

PS: the next generation V10 did catch my attention though. That should give plenty of fireworks because the V10 is simply ... ahhhr ... too crazy for words.

Personally I think the X6 will go like hot cakes. The E70 does not seem to fit the sporty bill as its predecessor. The X6 at least looks hot and fast.
If it runs and handles anything like the E53, I think its a winner. fwiw...
