Great news, with Efficient Dynamics and Hybrid technology BMW should smash the competition. I thought it would be interesting to see how hybrid tech caught on at BMW due to what I suppose must be multi ££££$$$$ invested into Hydrgen cells a la 7 serires? Do you think Hydrogen is the longer term zero emission view with Hybrids a nice 'stop gap' for the next 10 years etc?

I think your spot on w/ your conclusion.Hydrogen is the zero emission answer. The problem w/ hydrogen, at least here in the States,is distrubution.Short of some places in California and some governments...mostly local and state...there are no places to purchase hydrogen.Best case situation....if someone said install hydrogen today...that I've read about, is 10 or more years to get the US covered w/ hydrogen filling stations and convince auto makers to produce hydrogen compatible cars. I think the dual mode hybrid that will roll out in the X6,X5 and maybe the new 2nd Gen X3 is a bridge to something else. What that something else is...no one is really sure right now.BMW is working on KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) right now.Recovers energy that would normally be lost during braking and converts to electricity to run water pumps, oil pumps and maybe to charge a battery pack.Believe it or not...but BMW has put the "M" division in charge of most of BMW's future "Green" technology research.BMW takes the future "Green" projects very seriously. Thanks! BMW first revealed that its X6 SUV would be available as a hybrid model when it rolled out the X6 ActiveHybrid concept vehicle at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. The car has since been spotted testing in prototype form on both sides of the Atlantic and these latest spy images reveal a near-production ready version of the upcoming model.
Previous prototypes were seen sporting an oversized bulge on the bonnet, most likely to accommodate the new hybrid hardware. The latest prototype looks much more like the standard X6, although a small bump remains.

The new hybrid will feature BMW’s version of the modular two-mode hybrid system jointly developed with Daimler and General Motors and is expected to improve fuel efficiency by about 20% when compared to the xDrive50i V8 model.

The design uses twin electric motors which can either be used to boost acceleration, charge the batteries or as a generator to mutually power each other. The two-mode active transmission is based on an ECVT electrical continuously variable transmission. The two operating modes, one of which has been optimised for low, the other for high speeds, are supplemented by fixed transmission ratios.

BMW’s new-generation 7-series flagship is expected to debut the new hybrid system late next year or in early 2010, and then it will filter across to more models such as the X6. A concept version of the 7-series hybrid was revealed earlier this year, revealing that BMW's hybrid system will initially match a 4.4L V8 engine to the electric drive system. The petrol-electric X6 will likely feature the same powertrain when it hits the streets in 2010.

X6 Hybrid Under All Electric Power

Here is the link for a better quality vid than the youtube.LeMans maybe you can delete the youtube vid.Weird to hear the X6 Hybrid under all electric power.Complete silence except for tire and wind noise. In the 2nd vid the X6 transitions to full gas power as it heads back toward the PC Building.Seems BMW has toned down the NASCAR booming exhaust note on the Hybrid X6 vs the 50i X6 exhaust note.I guess in keeping w/ the "Green" theme. Thanks much!
