This is getting to be a real 'urban myth'. I haven't sat in one yet, but according to BMW's published figures the rear headroom in the X6 is
1.77" less than the X5.
Or to put that another way the X6's rear headroom is 0.8" less than a 5-series sedan, 0.25" less than a 3-series sedan and 0.5" more than a 3-series coupe.
That doesn't sound like its 'seriously compromised' to me, unless you need to shuttle around a coupe of NBA players on a regular basis...
